Mangalore, Jan 29: KMC Hospital, Attavar, will organize free consultations for patients with white patches on the occasion of World Leprosy Day from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm on Saturday January 31.

Leprosy, widely regarded as a curse because it is associated with deformity, is curable. If untreated it can progress and cause permanent damage to nerves, skin, eyes, and bones. It is transmitted through droplets from the nose and mouth of untreated infectious patients. The prevalence rate of new cases has come down by four percent compared to last year. Early detection and treatment can prevent disabilities associated with the disease.

KMC Hospital’s chief operating officer Dr Sunil Deshpande said that today the diagnosis and treatment of leprosy is easy and most endemic countries are striving to fully integrate leprosy services into existing general health services. He has urged the public to make maximum possible use of this opportunity.
