Sullia: Yakshagana in need of Major Surgery - Dr Prabhakar Joshi

Mangalore, Feb 23: The coveted 'Balipa Award' was conferred on veteran artiste and critic, Dr Prabhakar Joshi at the Sneha Shikshana Samste on Sunday February 22.

The event was organized by Tenkutittu Yakshagana Hitarakshana Vedike.

Receiving the award from T Shyam Bhat, executive officer, State Industrial Finance Corporation, Dr Joshi said, that the Yakshagana artistes, critics and art lovers need to conduct deep study and research, to protect the tradition and rich art of Yakshagana. The unwanted virus from various parts that have been afflicting Yakshagana must be removed forthwith. There is a need to bring improvement in the Yakshagana by removing the practices that are not in tune with out tradition, he opined.
 
Major surgery is required to be performed to the art of Yakshagana, to enable it to flourish as a major art of the coastal region, he stressed.

Uduvekodi Subbappaiah, Yakshagana artiste, delivered the felicitation address. Lakshmeesh Tolpady, thinker and Sudhir Ghate of Magnum Intergrafiks participated in the programme.

The speakers paid tributes to the late Sheni and Hegde, on the occasion.

DR Chandrashekhar Damle, convener of the Vedike conducted the programme.

Anekar Ganapaiah, Vedike president, welcomed the gathering. Dr Prabhakar Shishila, secretary, proposed vote of thanks.
