Bantwal, Mar 2: In an interesting development, a volleyball tournament organized by a local organization on Sunday March 1, had to be conducted under the  security of two contingents of  District Armed Reserve Police at Narsha school, because of political bickering between petty politicians and lack of sportsmanship on their part.

New Friends Club from Narsha village near Vittal had organized a volleyball tournament in the primary school ground on Sunday. At the last minute, the school betterment committee declined permission for holding the event. Reportedly, a local politician, who was angered by the fact that the organizers had invited people from a particular political outfit, had influenced this decision.

When the organizers chose to hold the event in the land owned by an individual, the policemen, perhaps at the behest of a political party, refused permission, sighting  rules regarding survey, plotting etc.  At the same time, some people who were averse to the holding of the event emptied a truck load of mud at this venue.

Sensing that tensions might escalate, two contingents of policemen arrived on the spot to control any untoward developments. Later, the tournament was somehow held at the Narsha PU College ground.

Bantwal taluk panchayat president chandrahas Shetty, speaking on the occasion, expressed his disgust at the lack of sportsmanship spirit on the part of those who hindered the smooth holding of the tournament.

Bantwal circle inspector Nanje Gowda and Vittal sub-inspector Umesh Uppalike oversaw security arrangements at the tournament.
