Sri Lakshmivarateertha Sripada Swamiji of Shiroor Mutt termed the pub attack “a lesson taught by the youth to the youth”. He said that many were happy with this incident, but did not express their joy.

The Swamiji was delivering a speech at ‘Mahila Jagrathi Sammelana’, organized by the Kannada Jagratha Vedike at Town Hall here on Monday March 9. “Valentine’s Day celebration is an evil culture. Our young generation has been distracted from Indian culture. Young women have been killed by youth belonging to other religions”, he claimed.

He questioned as to why the women’s commission does not send representatives when young women are killed in the district. He said that young people lacked proper guidance and there is a need for a forum to protect culture. The Swamiji lamented that foreign culture had spoiled the peaceful environment in the country.

T A Narayana Gowda, president, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, said that it is the bounden duty of every citizen to nip communal forces in the bud. He said that dividing people in the name of religion is not a good sign for a developing nation.

“An alleviation of poverty should be our aim. KRV has started a garment industry to provide jobs to the people. Movements should not be confined to shouting slogans, but must initiate welfare programmes”, he added.

“The government developmental programmes should reach the layman. KRV will undertake a movement in this regard”, added Narayana.

District in-charge minister J Krishna Palemar, Mamatha Gatti, Malini Hebbar, Dr Kripa Amar Alva, Jayanthi S Bangera, and G A Bava, were present.

Saw the write-up and the comments after almost a year. Nevertheless, would like to add a comment of my own. Sharing the stage does not mean sharing the ideas. The locus of my speech, which went unreported, was education, self-employment and financial independence of women. My M.Phil thesis has a chapter on conditions imposed on women. My Ph.D, which is in progress, focuses on the concept of re-writing myths. When I accept the opportunity to address a gathering of women, whether it is of an MNC or any other, it is the earnest desire to share ideas and experiences and not opportunism. To Jacintha, I would like to say that age catches up with everyone and so has it with me, to bless me with the maturity of responding and not reacting to remarks which reflect only partial understanding of the situation.

Mrs. Hebbar addressed women employees in an MNC few years ago, and preached them about liberating their orthodox thinking. How opportunists survive or is the age catching up with her too!

So drinking in pubs is not what the youth should do, but drinking in a bar or a wine shop is ok. Is this what the swami wants to convey?

It is surprising to see progressive ladies like Ms Kripa Alva @ Malini Hebbar sititng on stage and saying nothing to counter the narrow minded views of this swami. Only Mr Narayan Gowda expressed his views on communal forces according to this news article. All the others were mute spectators. How come all these women attendees just sat there quietly listening to all this nonsense from the swami.

More surprisingly he did not mention "killing" in his own backyard of a young lady "Padmapriya". He also did not mention which of the Veda or Section of Geeta taught him that women should be taught culture by assault. Joker allright!

T A Narayana Gowda is  the most sensible of the whole lot. He spoke what 90% of people think in this country. What he had told should have been a title for this news article.

Pub Attack was an exploitation on Women just as there are many other exploitations of women. Can these youngsters close down all the brothels, stop child marriage, stop dowry deaths in India which are bigger evils than Pub. The Programme is a Mahila Jagruthi Sammelan. In this programme I see no woman lighting  the Lamp, No woman is talking and once again it has become a Male Dominated Programme with only women as listeners. The Swamiji says young people lack proper guidance but the Pub Attack was done by Young People who took the Law in their Own Hands. This Action of young people was instigated by Elders of the Group. The Root of all Evil is in the Edlers of these groups The Swamiji should change his mind set and say that Women and Men should be given Equal Rights.
