Mangalore: Hindutva Groups Force Their Flags on Vehicles

The Hindu

Mangalore, Mar 12: In an act of defiance against the district administration’s drive to pull down buntings, posters and flags advertising the Hindu Samajotsava programme scheduled for March 15, activists, allegedly belonging to the Bajrang Dal and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), went around forcibly fixing saffron flags on vehicles near Bunts Hostel on Wednesday.

As the Hindutva activists stopped buses, autorickshaws and even private vehicles to fix flags, traffic came to a standstill. People could do little but wait until the Mangalore East police arrived on the scene. The police reined in the activists and cleared the road.

‘No warning’

Speaking to The Hindu, Sub-Inspector Shivaprasad M. said the police had no warning about the incident. While the district administration’s contention was that the advertisements and flags violated the model code of conduct stipulated by the Election Commission, the vice-president of the VHP, Jagadeesh Shenava, said, “Our banners are non-political, yet they have been removed.”

He stressed that the flags and banners were religious in nature and did not violate the code of conduct.

Mr. Shenava said, “The Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police should not interfere in this. This is only to publicise the upcoming Hindu Samajotsava programme.” Stressing that the buntings were in contravention of the model code of conduct, Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj told The Hindu that the code was being implemented through various Acts and rules.

He said the posters, buntings and flags were removed by invoking the provisions of the Karnataka Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act, 1981 and the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

If the administration does not wake up and foresee the consequences soon Karnataka may have communal riots. How long the citizens have to suffer like this?

forcibly fixing the flag? what nonsense, after BJP came to power everything becomes forcefull, if we don't retaliate then they might forcefully plant these flags on churches, mosques etc., the only option left is " EENT KA JAWAB PATHAR SE" coz we could not trust BJP-ruled police force anymore.

Do not interrupt perperators of vandalisim the law will take care - people are free and they will decide course of action by their correct thinking during elections, muscle power got no where it was Mahathma Gandhi (non violence) who got rid of the British and not the goonda groups (sects) of demented unemployed leaders who mislead the youth who are in the prime of their lives. Later these very youth get rid of the misleading path and become better human beings ( without going through the rough how do you learn) leave them alone but with stern corrective action through proper channels (RAISE YOUR VOICE ITS YOUR RIGHT) Otherwise there would not be a war between Pandavas and Kauravas ( Good and Evil) the process is complete only after a terrific debate.

Let the religion and the related festivities be practiced and celebrated within the four walls of each house. Let it not come to the roads. A religion is good when it is practiced within the heart and expressed within the compounds of the Temples, Churches, Masjids and the like. In a country like India, practice of any religion outside the four walls of an individual and outside the compound walls of the religious places must be completely banned. No literature of any religion, banners, flags must be displayed in public. No religious gatherings, functions to be permitted in public and instead they could be conducted in closed door halls. No mikes should be allowed for any religious activities in the public and also no religious function related processions be allowed. If the people of any Country needs peace, this is the only way. Government Machinery and administration must be strict and apply all acts, rules and regulations and be strict. This applies to me and every one. Jai Ho.
