Bangalore, Mar 12: How many of us keep our TV sets switched on even while no one is watching? Over 95% households in Bangalore, says a survey. 

The average Bangalorean doesn’t seem to have become energy-conscious yet even while the state is reeling under a huge power crisis. A recent survey done by Biodiversity Conservation India Limited (BCIL) covering all zones of the city shows that citizens still don’t use electrical appliances efficiently.

More than 50% do not put off the main switch of the appliance resulting in 30% of power loss of appliances on standby mode.

The study was done across four zones of Bangalore covering a sample size of 403 citizens. Most of the citizens interviewed were housewives. Even though 40% of the respondents complained that they were not getting enough power and the government was to blame, 82% said that they were not ready to pay even a penny extra to get adequate power.

A good number of people still used energy guzzlers like microwave ovens and electric cookers and 30% of them think that it is cheaper than using LPG. While the study reveals that most Bangaloreans are not conserving energy enough, the respondents feel they are pro-active and ready to take action. While 95% claimed that they try to ensure that they waste as little electricity as possible, 85% said they switch off lights and fans whenever they leave the room.

Chandrashekar Hariharan, CEO, BCIL, said: “The results of the survey are depressing. Certain easy solutions can be implemented easily. The main switch can be switched off to avoid 30% of power loss for appliances like TV and stereo systems. Citizens should look at alternative measures like composting organic waste, using solar heaters and efficient lights like CFLs. We have to opt for such measures because soon there would be no other choice.”
