Udupi, Mar 13: Deputy Commissioner P. Hemalatha said on Thursday that schools should have more programmes on environment. She was speaking after presenting the “Best Eco Club” award to seven school eco clubs for their achievements in creating environmental awareness, here.

The function was organised by the Pilikula Regional Science Centre Society and the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC).

The Best Eco Club awards were given to the Nesara Eco Club of Volakadu Government High School of Udupi, Nisarga Eco Club of Parkala High School, Hasiru Mane Eco Club of Government High School, Bhoomi Eco Club of Sarojini M. Kushe School and Nisarga Eco Club of Venkataramana English Medium High School at Kundapur, Vanasri Eco Club of Government Composite High School of Hanumantnagar and Pushpakashi Eco Club of Beary Seaside Public School at Kodi near Kundapur. Ms. Hemalatha said that people should retain close contact with environment.

When people migrated from villages to cities, they had a tendency to forget their contact with nature or environment, which they enjoyed when they were in their villages.

“Environment should not be reduced to mere academic lessons to students but should also become a way of life,” she said.

Deputy Director of Public Instruction K. Ananda and Block Education Officer D. Manjunathayya were among those present.
