Mangalore, Mar 13: The endowment lecture programme for the current academic year was held in the premises of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy on Thursday March 12.

The event was organized by Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy.

Speaking after inaugurating the programme, Dr Vaman Nandavar of Pilikula Cultural Village Scheme, said that five languages out of 196 in the country are on the verge of extinction and as per a report of the UNESCO, Tulu has been identified as one such language.

But the report needs to be supported by facts and thoroughly reviewed, since Tulu language has received world wide popularity and does not in any way meet the parametres of a language that is on the wane, he stressed.

A large number of developmental works are taking place to protect and nurture the language. Tulu has also gained recognition in the field of business, but still UNESCO has come out with a report without conducting proper research and pooling proper information, he charged.

Indira Hegde, research scholar, Bangalore, delivered the lecture on the 'Guttu system of Tulunadu’, on the occasion.

I K Boluvar, artiste, Puttur delivered a speech on the Tulu theatre, in the Sadanand Suvarna endowment lecture programme.

Dr Paltady Ramakrishna Achar, president, Tulu Sahitya Academy presided over the function.

Uday Dharmasthala, member of the Academy welcomed the gathering. Ratnavati Baikady, member, rendered the invocation. Duggappa Kajekar, member, compered the programme. H S Shivarudrappa, registrar of the Academy proposed vote of thanks.

M K Ravindranath, endowment donor, was present on the occasion.

Well said 'Balakrishna Shetty, Yellur, Udupi/Dubai'. You are right ...our konkani is well safe being goa as a state for our language and also we use our own language in almost all our purposes/functions etc....But i see tulu been never used in any way in most of the times by people in tulunad (kannada domination). I love tulu a lot and its one of my language....can say my second favourite language. I see tulu people different in mind and culture as compared to rest of karnataka and well it diserves a good place along all languages in our country ,and i think can be achieved having a seperate small state like goa.....all TULU people of udupi , mangalore and kasargood need to think about this and save the language "stop we being ruled from 450km away Bangalore " beware of KRV as they are already inn in tulunad.....

I was shocked to hear the sales persons in many of the Udupi shops speaking to me in Kannada during my last visit to native place. They did not know Tulu. There has to be strong will to protect Tulu. Konkani remains protected because of the State of Goa. The best way to save Tulu and the people of the coastal belt is to carve the region out as a separate State. This would bring back the value of Tulu and also stop we being ruled from 450km away Bangalore.

At home Konkani and when we come out Tulu, that was a time....Reaserchers please save this language. I know one thing as long as shetty's (Bunts) survive this language will not die !!!! It is my personal opinion. It may be a fate of Konkani...as we feel low to speak konkani !!!!!

Being a TULU person i am really sad to hear this...this is only because of the use of kannada ...we tuluvas use kannada in each and every public place ..except in our house ....but why we should do that ... we can make this language stable when we make less use of kannada in public places and offices in around mangalore and udupi and surrounding places. Its clear that TULU will never get any chances in schools .....
