Mangaluru, Apr 30: Thieves who entered a house near Sathekatte in Haleangady by cutting open the wooden pieces of the window at the back of the said house, succeeded in taking away gold ornaments and cash. The incident happened on Sunday April 28 night.

The burgled house is owned by Bhaskar, a railway employee working at Suratkal. Gold ornaments worth four lac rupees and Rs 30,000 in cash were stolen. The theft happened when Bhaskar along with family members was away, taking part in the 'Nemotsava' programme held in the house of a relative at Kulai on Sunday April 28. He returned home at about 1.30 am on Monday when he came to know about the theft.

The thieves broke open the steel almirah inside the house, and threw clothes around when searching for valuables. They took away 20 golden rings worth four lac rupees. They also took away Rs 30,000 cash kept in the room of Leela Shettigar, who has been taking care of the children at home since the last six years. The thieves seem to have run away after seeing that the house owner had come back.

The wooden window was shattered with the help of pickax. The pickax was not found. A steel rod was left behind by the thieves near the house. They had thrown some clothes into the well. They demaged the electric bulb near the puja room when stealing, and the ceiling fan they put on was running when he returned home, Bhaskar said. He asserts that those who knew the family well were behind this theft.

Mulky police along with sniffer dogs and finger print experts surveyed the site. A case of theft was registered in Mulky police station, and the police have begun investigation.
