Udupi, Apr 13: The inaugural of 'Dalit Women's Swabhimani (self esteem) Conference’, organized to create awareness among the taluk level workers was held at the District Ambedkar Bhavan here on Sunday April 12.

The event was organized by State Dalit Women's Union.

Speaking after inaugurating the programme, Lakshminarayana Nagawara, State Dalit Sangharsh Samiti convener, said that hundreds of rivers are bound to join the tumultous ocean. Hence, any agitation, however small, will be strengthened with the people's support. The agitation may get retarded, if wrong principles are followed by its leaders under certain circumstances temporarily, but the movement in itself does never die, he explained.

Any union or organization draws strength for the execution of its plans of action and to sustain its strength without becoming weaker, from the women who actively participate in the organizational activities and the same principle is true even in the homes, he said.

The dalit movement is not merely limited for the people belonging to schedule castes and schedule tribes. It can include people from any caste and religion. Political power is necessary for the betterment of any community, said Nagawara.

People must unite to defeat the BJP which is communal. There is a necessity to unitedly fight to root out the BJP from the coastal belt. The BJP must not come out victorious in the election. If the left parties want to keep the BJP out of power, they should withdraw their candidate from the fray and end the understanding they have reached with Deve Gowda, because of whom the BJP could rise to power in the state, he demanded.

The Sangh Parivar is trying to replace the present constitution framed by Ambedkar by dubbing the principles preached therein as wrong, with the only purpose of adopting a constitution containing principles preached by Manu. To defeat these designs, an awareness campaign need to be conducted against such efforts and every one must have education, stressed Nagawara.

Sundari Puttur, district convener, presided over the programme.

Sarawati V welcomed the gathering. Jayan Malpe delivered the introductory speech. Saroja K proposed vote of thanks. Dinakar Bengre compered the programme.

Dr Anusuya Kumble, author, Bagalkote Jamkhandi, rationalist Atrady Amrita Shetty, Manjula, Shimoga Samanata Mahila Vedike and Bhagya Hagalaganchi from Sringeri etc., were present on the occasion.
