Mangaluru, Jul 25: Someshwara, which had been identified as the largest gram panchayat in the state, began functioning in the form of municipality with effect from Wednesday July 24. Vani V Alva, who was the chief officer of Ullal municipality, took over as the first chief officer of Someshwara municipality.

Vani took charge in the presence of Someshwara gram panchayat president, Rajesh A Uchil, vice president, Susheela S Nayak, panchayat development officer, Manohar Gowda, and others. Taluk panhayat member, Ravishankar, panchayat members, and some leaders were also present.

Speaking on the occasion, Rajesh Uchil said that since the last 12 years, a struggle to win the recognition of municipality had been carried out apolitically and the efforts have borne fruits now. He wished that unlike some municipalities where facilities have not improved even after being upgraded as municipalities, Someshwara should become an exception and various facilities should be made available here and the municipality should achieve all-round progress. He said that the gram panchayat members will function as municipal councillors for a year.

Vani V Alva said that with the upgradation of the gram panchayat, all systems will undergo change. She said that initially the people will suffer but in course of time, they will get good administration. She sought support of the people to make the new municipality vibrant and successful.
