Byndoor, Nov 2: State minister for home and cooperation, Basavaraj Bommai, agreed that the police have social responsibility in addition to regulating crime. Towards this end, the government will be initiating steps to make the police system society - centric, he explained.

Bommai was speaking after inaugurating the new building of the office of the police circle inspector, Byndoor, which has been built at a cost of Rs 41 lac, on Friday November 1.

"In the society, only a small fraction of the population has criminal mindset. Regulating crime and investigation become easier if the police develop close link and relationship with the citizens. Towards this end, the government will also improve service conditions, duty place and other basic necessities, which happen to be the other phase of necessary steps towards improving their efficiency," he stated.

Bommai observed that with the increased use of mechanical equipment backed by modern technology, the crime involving misuse of this equipment is on the rise. "Bank accounts are being hacked. We will hold meetings involving bank officers and senior police officers in order to strike coordination between the two. We are also taking steps to infuse power into the cyber police system to stop misuse of social websites. Coastal Security Force would be strengthened to rein in crime happening through the coast, and the number of speed boats being provided to the force would be increased," he explained.

Bommai said that in the next state budget, funds would be set aside for these things and efforts would be made to get grants from the centre too.

Local MLA, B M Sukumar Shetty, who presided, noted that Byndoor constituency, which is entirely rural, has seven police stations. "People here like to remain peaceful. Police need to support them. After a case is registered, if a counter complaint comes, they should study the truthfulness before registering it. Otherwise, people of both sides will be compelled to frequently visit the police station and courts," he pointed out.

Udulpi MLA, Raghupati Bhat, Bhatkal MLA, Sunil Naik, advocate, Mattar Ratnakar Hegde, taluk panchayat president, Shyamala Kunder, gram panchayat president, Mookammbu Devadiga, district superintendent of police, Nisha James, additional superintendent of police, Kumarchandra, assistant superintendent fo police, Hariram Shankar, circle police inspector, Suresh Naik, sub-inspector, Thimmesh B N, and others were present. Teacher, Sudhakaar P Byndoor, compered the programme. On this occasion, contractor of the building, Pramod Shetty Mandarthi, was felicitated.

Speaking after the function, the minister told the media persons that in place of the women's police station in Kundapur that has been shifted to Udupi, a new women's police station would be sanctioned for Kundapur after getting proposal recommended by the superintendent of police. He also said that the pressure of work that has mounted on account of non-recruitment of staff since the last 30 months would be met to some extent by recruiting 6,000 people immediately. "We will also initiate steps to recruit more policemen. We plan to buy 113 vehicles now, and take steps to buy 500 more. We also plan to modernize the department. If there are anomalies in the implemntation of Auradkar committee report on police wages, the same would be set right," he stated.
