Mangaluru: Bishop urges government to spread awareness about CAA, NRC

Mangaluru, Dec 24: Mangaluru Bishop Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, noting that there is confusion among the people about Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), has urged the government to educate the masses about the need for these measures and to win over their confidence.

He was speaking to media persons here on Monday December 23.

He felt that there is opposition among the people against CAA and NRC because of lack of clear understanding about these things. "When I was in Italy, the people had entered into friction with the government when the government changed the currency of the country from Lira to Euro. Everything will fall in line once awareness is spread and people come to know the relevance of these measures," he felt.

He noted that 70 percent of the population lives in villages and most of them do not have proper idea about CAA and NRC. He sought the responsibility of spreading knowledge about these acts to the people to be entrusted to gram panchayat officials. "I am distressed by the disturbance of peace in the city because of recent unfortunate incidents. Our condolences to bereaved families, and we pray for the early recovery of the injured. People of the city always maintain peace, believe in universal brotherhood and coexist with mutual love and respect. Let us uphold peace, lead a life of coexistence and relish human values," he wished.
