Clenergen India to Launch 64 MW Biomass Power Plant in Mangalore

Mangalore, Oct 21: Clenergen India Private Limited, the Indian arm of Clenergen Corporation (CRGE), a US-based biomass power manufacturer has plans to set up wood-fired plant with a total capacity of 64 MW in Mangalore, Karnataka, which is among the two wood-fired plants the company plans to set up in South India. The other power project is a 16 MW plant at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.

Addressing media here on Tuesday October 20, Mark Quinn, chief executive officer, Clenergen Corporation Limited (UK) said that the projects would be based on the pyrolysis gasification technology and would operate on feed stocks invested from plantations set up by the company for cultivation of its own scientifically researched and developed species of grass and trees.
 
Clenergen India will invest in all Rs 1,135.05 crore for developing the plants in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Indian subsidiary has already entered into a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Power Trading Corp (PTC). According to Quinn, the company needs around 4,000 acres in Tamil Nadu and 16,000 acres in Karnataka where it would grow trees that offer high biomass to fire its power plants.

Clenergen has contractually secured access to the feedstock required for cultivation. One is a species of grass named Beema Bamboo and the other is the species which is native to China and parts of Asia called Paulownia.

"We have already signed up for 800 acres in Tamil Nadu with a religious institution. Discussions are on for another 1,200 acres and arrangements are being made for the acquisition of the balance 2,000 acres in Tirunelvelli district," he added.

Clenergen aims at generating clean electricity by developing and operating distributed environmental power systems which converts cultivated feedstock and a range of agricultural waste into electricity.
