Mangalore, Oct 21: Principal district and sessions judge and chairman of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) H R Deshpande said that the sheer number of police personnel, who have laid their lives protecting the law of land is the indication of the overpowering presence of violence in today’s society.

He was speaking at the Police Martyrs’ Day held at the Police Grounds, Pandeshwar here on Wednesday October 21. Appreciating the people-friendly programmes being launched by the Dakshina Kannada police, he called on the public to make use of these programmes to strengthen the trust between the police and public. This will go a long way and lead towards a safe society, he said.

Deshpande also expressed his happiness about the true to life portrayal of police personnel in the movies at the present unlike in the past where the person playing a cop would be merely reduced into a caricature and buffoon-like character. He also acknowledged the police department’s role in warding away this myth.

The names of all 833 police personnel who laid down their lives in the last one year was read out by the superintendent of police Dr Subrahmanyeshwar Rao. Senior police officials including the Inspector General of Police (western range) Gopal Hosur and several other dignitaries laid wreaths at the memorial. Deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj was present.

About Police Martyrs’ Day

The Police Martyrs’ Day is observed since 1959 on every October 21 in memory of a small contingent of police personnel who were attacked by Chinese troops, which resulted in killing of all the ten police personnel. Since on the fateful day they became martyrs, the day is being observed in their memory.

Ablilash!!! Don't be a hypocrite. You are only fooling yourself and not others with your hollow comments. Read Eric'c comments a hundred times if you have not understood. You are best advised to do something good to the society in honor of the dead rather than lip service.

We always considered the Police Personnel negatively. I would say since independence till Year 2005 the police personnel had a very bad name. I am quite certain that since few years the Mangalore Police are doing a wonderful job in controlling communal elements and crime too. In India 1 policeman has to man 1,000 Indians. They go through a lot of hell in their life leading to depression, physical and mental strain and also to Manage their family with a meagre salary. That is why a lot illegal activity takes place in the police department that leads us to criticize them a lot. Every person wants to have wealth, comforts and all the benefits of life and with that meagre salary and heavy work load brings out inefficiency in their work. It was always there in my mind that every area has a Police Station. If the area forms a committee of retired persons who will visit every house once a week to know the problems of people being faced and bring it to the knowledge of the S.I. It is also important that a social gathering takes place once a year through small contribution by all people where we felicitate the Police Personnel of our Area thereby giving confidence to these Police Personnel that we respect and care for them and in return they protect from evil. We should help the POlice Station of our area kept clean by we supporting them in their cleaniless every sunday. If we have the inclination to do it we can achieve anything. Many Jobs can be done without money.
