MANGALORE, Oct 23 (The Hindu): A mock drill on how to handle a situation when terrorists take a high official hostage, conducted at the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Thursday, flummoxed many officials. Only a few officers, including Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj and Superintendent of Police A.S Rao, knew about the drill in advance.

In the mock exercise, the building was taken over by terrorists and the Deputy Commissioner was taken hostage.

The intruders had blown up the lift and staircases, necessitating a different kind of evacuation. After the district officials “negotiated with the terrorists”, the Fire and Emergency Services Department brought Mr. Ponnuraj down from his third-floor office using a rope.

The entire effort was coordinated by the District Disaster Management Authority.

thanks daijiworld for the enlightenment. do you think we are still prepared for any major incident? do u all think that ropes will do the job? this nothing but mere showcase of lack of technology . to be positive about it its nice to see that the cops came out of the usual box and took some initiative . but really vert disappointed with the ropes and specially the firefighters this machines are in their mid 80's . some1 please fund them for god sakes

Mr. Roydon D'Souza, Mangalore, U did not got my point. What am pointing is, during mock drill we should use some technique. Not climbing down the people like Jackfruit from tree. There is a safety device. We shoud use that one. I hope u understood the point very well, best of luck.

The police force is still not equipped with the latest tech gadgets! To be more productive we need to have an edge over technology and also this kind of mock drills do help. @Nihar, Mangalore How can someone climb down? Funny :) Mock drill doesn't show your weakness but equips/prepares you for the future situations

This is a good excercise by DK Poice superintedent Mr. Ponnuraj. The main threat to India is Pakistan and its extremist Islamic Jihadis (Taliban)and anti-national elements in India who aid them.

Through Mock Drill there is no dedication to work. Dedication to work comes when there is a real incident. We have observed on several occasion in real incidents the Police or Security Personnel have always reached late. Take for e.g. 26/11 or mumbai train blast. The 26/11 issue was a total disaster when the Black Cat Commandos were sent by BEST Bus to actual Location thereby the terrorists had almost destroyed 75% in and around Taj Mahal. Good sense never prevails. It is Time the Police or security personnel show the real dedication to such incident. Even Last year Church and women at Pub attack by fanatics showed lack of action from police. Take the maoists who could be in 100s or 1000s are still stronger and they attack without notice. This itself shows the police, the Home ministry and even the Security personnel being not prepared to counter such attacks without notice is a total failure. It is time the Security and Police Personnel show dedication at times of real attack.

Excellent, and good work by all parties. How ever the evacuation by rope is ancient, specially when person evacuated are scared of heights. It looks the DC is pretty athletic.
