Mangalore: 60 Women from District Went Missing During Last Five Years !

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Oct 25: A meeting of the circle inspectors and sub-inspectors of Dakshina Kannada (DK), Kodagu, Udupi, Hassan, Mysore and Bangalore districts had been convened in the city on Saturday October 24. Western range inspector general of police (IGP), Gopal  Hosur, informed later that in Dakshina Kannada district alone, 60 women in the age group of 18 to 35 years had gone missing from the year 2004 till September 2009, and their whereabouts were yet to be traced.

All the missing cases registered in different police stations of DK district will be thoroughly reviewed to find out about any possible link with serial killer Mohan Kumar, he explained. He added, that the families concerned have revealed that some of the girls had called up their close ones after reaching far off places. The policemen are specifically investigating the cases afresh, where bodies of the women were found in the toilets of bus stands and where they were found to have consumed cyanide. The IGP revealed that the railway authorities have been asked to furnish the details of the lifeless bodies of women found in the railway toilets. Kerala policemen have also been contacted, he stated.

Inspector Rajanna from Mysore district attended the meeting with a list, details and photographs of 12 missing women, the bodies of whom had been found in the toilets of KSRTC bus stand within the limits of that police station. Out of them, Mohan Kumar has confessed to have been responsible for the killing of five. Other seven cases will be investigated deeply, he explained.

The IGP informed that steps have been initiated to find out the details as to where Mohan had sold the ornaments he had removed from the bodies of the girls, and to recover them. Investigations will cover recovery of unclaimed bags, clothes and other things found in bus stands, hotels etc., he added. A detailed report on the materials gathered so far will be submitted to the state director general of police with a request to form a special team to investigate these cases, Hosur divulged.

When the IGP was questioned about the inefficacy of the policemen in hunting down the killer based on the fact that the bodies of the murdered women were regularly found in the toilets of bus stands, he said that the killer did not leave any traces and that the fact that the police officers get frequently transferred interferes with the investigation work. At the same time, the department will find out if there were any shortcomings in the investigation mechanism and besides submitting a report to higher officials about them, recommendations will be made to bring changes in the investigation system, he said.

He also added that the department will pool all available details and submit a high quality report to the court, in an effort to get a verdict of death sentence against Mohan Kumar. However, the final decision is left to the courts, he noted.

Our police dept., is only for criminals and politicians. Criminals become friends with the police force and scare the innocent. Politicians require these police men to take care of their need. Then where is the time for these police people to take care of the general public. If their salary is low, they are bribed by all and sundry.

For every small work remember you need to pay or else no body is there to listen to you in the police station. If the politicians wants some radical change in the attitude of the police force, let them make them free, increase their salary and perks and allow them to work in an professional manner as is required. Let these politician appoint Mrs. Kiran Bedi as the Home Minister and give her a free hand in the working of police

Dear all, All the readers have expressed how they feel about the Police. It is not only in Karnataka but spread across India. Its all very true. We are still following the 1861 rules made by the Britishers primarily to protect the British elite and their administrators. No politician worth the salt has shown interest in police reforms since the time the Britishers left. In today's India it serves them and of-course the police themselves.

IG's submission (if many who have not noticed) that the killer had left no traces answers it all the investigative skills, brains and equipments available with the Police. The wielding of "danda" and extracting confessions through 3rd degree torture (sans video footage) and of-course brute power is all that defines our police force. Immensely blessed by our politicians and goons who decide their placements and postings.

Their salaries have only weakened their psyche, morale and duty towards their country. Yet they are a happy lot with that as it serves them and our politicians. Even with such poor salaries and paltry legal benefits one wonders the avalanche of applications for a police job (constable, sub-inspector or inspector).

All said and done, it took 18 innocent lives and 5 years to call for a circle inspectors and sub-inspectors meeting. You mean no accountability against the Inspectors and sub-inspectors for their shoddy investigation of the murders.

I read in one of the newspaper that since Mohan belongs to Dalit category, filing case and processing was difficult for the police. It is really bad in our country that criminals are taking the advantages of their caste and religions to escape from police investigations. We should understand the practical difficulties of Police department too before commenting on their efficiency.

We have been hearing about serial killings for some time and it is expedient that apart from apprehending the killer it is also necessary that our young women are educated not to fall a prey to the blatant killers. This kind of induction should commence early in life at the very schools where children are educated.

The concept should be PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE. Poor young ladies have paid dearly for their mistakes. No doubt our Law Enforcement people under the direction of IGP Gopal Hasur and S.P. Dr. As. Rao are doing their best. They could do even better if they launch on an awareness program at grassroots. Joe Gonsalves

I just want to input some more information for general public. Recently my cousine (BA 1st class) got ed for the Sub Inspector Post after passing all written and Physical fitness examinations. During the final interview (at the end of the interview which he says he was sure about the success) he was asked to pay rupees 10 lacs for getting the job directly by the high profile interviewing committee. He rejected the offer saying if I pay 10 lacks to get the job, how can I give sincere service to the society. Now for time being he is working as a supply person in one of the Mangalore's restaurant for Rs.2500 per month.

Our Law and Judiciary alone can not control crimes, its our responsibility. The education pattern should change to mold a child as a good citizen, instead of compititions in getting marks on records, we should teach them a way of responsible citizens, teach moral charectors, build up the young generations... with caring and sharing, irrespective of religion, caste, creed....male or female... and deep concern for fellow being.

The things are not going right with in the police department in DK. Three main reasons can be attributed to this. 1. Interference of the politicians 2. Corrupt police officers 3. People who bribe and does not protest when there is injustice The faith of the people is disappeared completely and this has led to increased violence as many have resorted to taking law into their hands. This is a wakeup call now and DK police has prove their mettle and this is definitely not possible unless peoples support.

While one can't generalize, the police do take salary for wearing their uniform alone. Their attitude towards those who approach them is so atroicious, that one would rather suffer loss, than attend the summons of the police. They raise the tone and start abusing dignified people as though they are criminals. Tainted that they are, they are unable to see the difference between a criminal and a victim.

No wonder 60 women are missing in one district, wasn't this considered a pattern, didn't get any attention, and there is not one police fellow who is committed to the cause of providing justice and eradicating crime in society. They attend to Passport queries, extortion queries, minority bashing (love affairs, business dispute etc). Thanks to 'Love Jihad' or whatever, atleast now they have woken up. Woken up enough to say that 60 cases are unresolved. By the time the 60 are resolved, we may have another number recorded again.

Police force needs moral training, their family background should be thoroughly checked, just to ensure that they are made of stuff that can provide service to humanity and to the state. Shame Shame department, I wonder how you still adorn your uniform! And those few, who attend to pubs, theaters & parks etc to save the women, where were you all when so many women became victims of lust? Shame on you too.

Officers, when a citizen comes to the police for help you are either busy entertaining some influenced Goonda or some criminal politician to take care of your needs and your needy family. No doubt you have got into the services on your own merit and to make money not serve the people.Dont you guys feel guity of what is happening. It could have been stopped or the murders could have reduced if you guys would have investigated immediately. You guys waited for 60 murders and now you wait to be feliciated. Why are you investigating even now. Only GOD can save us.

This is very sad, innocent girls were being killed from last 5 years and police are closing the case just saying suicide . Probably all these ladies who were killed were from poor families, so no reward will be given by these poor families to the police. If any big shots are killed immediately they will investigate and find out. but poor people only god SHOULD SAVE ! COME ON POLICE WAKE UP!
