Udupi, Oct 26: The road users were not only surprised, but also faced serious problems, as a flash protest by way of road blockade, was staged by the activists of ‘Heddari Ulisi Samiti’ under the leadership of Sri Laxmivarateertha Swamiji of Shirur Mutt, who is next in line for taking over Paryaya, Kolalagiri church priest, Jerome Monteiro, local MLA, Raghupati Bhat, Udupi Urban Development Authority chairman, Sudhakar Shetty, Govindaraj Hegde of ‘Heddari Ulisi Samiti’, BJP leader Bykadi Suprasad Shetty, taluk panchayat member, Satish Poojary, Chinmayamurty, Umesh Shetty and others at Kallianpur Santekatte near here. The protest started at about 10 am on Monday October 26.

The protestors demanded for taking up immediate repairs and restoration works for the national highway 17, which has remained in a neglected state since long. They pointed out that assurances doled out earlier in respect of repairing the highway, have remained unfulfilled, and held up the traffic for about 90 minutes, as a result of which, long lines of vehicles were formed on both sides of the road.  The protestors wanted the deputy commissioner of the district to personally come and hear their grievances.

Assistant commissioner, Ramesh, came on the scene and held talks with the protestors. He informed that a sum of Rs 1.5 crore is being released from the calamity fund of the state, for filling the pot holes on the national highway and for undertaking certain other repairs.

The protestors dispersed at about 11.30 am, but not before warning that they will undertake a stronger protest again, if the road repairs are not taken up within 15 days.

The government and district administration is at its worst. The NH 17 is in pathetic condition because of the lack of interest of the state govt and district administration. The same NH17 is a rubberised stretch of bliss in Kerala where it rains as much as south canara or even more.

This clearly is a proof that the government is not intetested.I appreciate swamiji and his supporters and full-fledgedly encourage his contribution in making the MLA immediately intervene in to the situation and make some headway. We want more swamijis like this for cause of yet another pathetic road, the NH 48 to Bangalore from Mangalore....swamiji....may your tribe increase

I dont agree and support this move by our Religious and other leaders creating troubles on the road. Common man is allready having trouble commuting on this road and roadblock is causing additional troubles to the common man like me. It would have been wisw to file a criminal complaint on the person responsible for this road instead of troubling the common man. We can see the clearly see the center and State politics in this. " Jai Ho India and Karnataka"

I travelled on this road or whatever you want to call this stretch of 50/60 kms of road. It does not exist per the norms of National Highways. It is a scandal of the first order when our National Highways are being looted by the National robbers- the contractors, the supervising engineers( maybe they are not even qualified) and the politicians who come on bended knees and folded hands to get elected and after getting elected only keep their pockets open to be filled with bribes and kickbacks- am happy that the people have served an ultimatum on them- otherwise lets all give them "a kick on their backsides".

I was in Udupi last week, highway condition is pathetic. I could not believe. I was shocked, why our people are so soft. Its very clear, we do not have able / smart, who really wants to work for our place. That is the reason we get hired MP's from outside. Its shame for our local people. Local leaders should not allow outsiders to contest from our place. when our land is used for National Transport system, then it is the duty of the concerned dept. to keep roads in good condition for local people. AS per me irrespective of party, all politician from our place should work for betterment of their place or they should not be in politics in any level. This is clearly cheating for the people of DK / Udupi. I feel this organisation should not relax, till we get 4 lane. Let our politician see the highway of other state, its done in class. NOW ITS CLEAR WHY THERE IS NAXALS IN THIS COUNTRY. Even small group get mad, its problem for whole community. Luckily we do not have. Politician / commisioners / Highway Dept, pls. take necessary action to correct the roads of my Native place, by respecting to your daily bread and butter which comes from peoples money. God Bless

Good initiative but shouldn’t be a benchmark for every irrelevant/non issues only on context basis. The fact that such protests remain peaceful is a great achievement, kudos to the religious leaders. The roads in DK are always neglected due to government apathy with ample contributions from corrupted contractors and engineers in the system. I heard of corruption from my friend whose dad worked in PWD department, he being a diligent engineer. Contractors decide the fate of construction tenders by threats to engineers (at times with physical force) following it up by sub-standard work. To quote one of our complacencies, we the citizen do not demand that our tax money is held accountable. As a thought - a formalized public forum should be setup which will account for the government funds and monitor it till the stage of implementation. Closing byte to the government- Transport/Roads ministry, do you traverse on road or travel only in heli-copters?? And as recent history shows, heli-copters aren’t too reliable either!!!

very Good! a right move in right direction. People from Uttra Kannada, Udupi and Mangalore Districts should jointly arrange the protest to get immediate response.

Best way to "Heddari Ulisi" is to demolish all remaining road, atleast smooth ride can be enjoyed with little bit of dust.
