Mangalore, Oct 27:
A football tournament in memory of Benjamin D’Souza, sports patron and former physical director of St Aloysius College, was inaugurated at the football ground at Nehru Maidan on Monday October 26.

The memorial tournament called ‘Invitation League’ was inaugurated by Fr Sweebert D’Silva, principal of St Aloysius College.

He said, “Late Benjamin D’Souza’s role in identifying sports and games talent at St Aloysius College is remarkable. He moulded the best personalities in the field and was successful in his effort as many students excelled in their careers through sports and games in the college”.

D M Aslam, president of Dakshina Kannada Football Association (DKFA), presiding over the inaugural of the tournament said, “Benjamin D’Souza loved sports and games and considered the playground a religious place. He was involved in the making of sports personalities and gave a lot to the field. Being a lover of hockey and football, his efforts in popularizing such games are still encouraging others”.

“The tournament is being organized to honour Benjamin D’Souza and after the tournament, a state-level team of 30 members will be formed after selection of the best players”, he added.

The league tournament will end on Tuesday November 10 with the super league. There are 8 teams participating in this tourney which have been selected from the Independence Cup tournament held in August.

Rolphie Mascarenhas, Director Kanachur Academy of Liberal Education , Santhosh D’Souza, son of Benjamin D’Souza, and office-bearers of DKFA were present.

More than 10 years have passed ever since MR.BENJAMIN has passed away. Better late than never to begin anything good. Let the new generation know that Mr.Benjamin originally hails from Kelmbet, Bola parish and then shifted to Panja, near Dharmastala. Late Bishop Raymond D' Mello was Benjamin's maternal uncle. His brother Late Rev.Dr.John D' Souza was a professor in one of the seminaries in Rome for 10 years and then returned to Allahabad Diocese and taught in Allahabad Seminary for many years and died very young at the age of 51 just 3 days before his silver jubilee of priesthood. Benjamin died on Good Friday in 1996/1997. DKF has refreshed the memories of Bejamin. Thanks Daiji for the coverage.

There is a saying better late than never, it has finally dawned to have a tournament in memory of Mr. Benjamin D'souza, a great sports enthusiast and physical director not only in college circles and D.K. but even in the state level. He was involved in all sports activities and thousnds of sportsmen have been groomed by him over the years but his passion had been in hockey. It would be befitting to have a All India or State level hockey tournament in his memeory. There are hundreds of sports lovers who would want to contribute to this cause in his memory. I wish this tournament all the sucess.

Mr. Benjamin sir was a great personality. He was a superb sportsman and Physical Education Director. Even today I praise his qualities of sportsmenship with my three children whenever applicable (just three days before I have talked about him to my son! when you are in any sports it simply comes to relate him to sports). I am happy to read about something dedicated in his memory. Under his guidance countless Mangalorean sports men and women have benefited. I have played different sports with him especially Hockey and athelics I enjoyed the most while at St. Agnes College. He was a good critic for improving the game and I remember most of the days he used to wait for us in the mornings be it winter or summer. If we happened to be early we were happy. Sure this great soul enjoys the Eternal Bliss with God. Certainly, it is not too late to have many more different tournaments in his honour. May God Bless us all.

This is the first time in so many years I am hearing about a tournament conducted in his memory. Benjamin Sir has made Athletes into real sportsmen. He has instilled dedication and interest in them. If not for him we would not see St.Aloysius College winning so many tournaments be it Cricket, Hockey or Athletics during his tenure.

I cannot forget how much he supported me during my cricketing days. He was my biggest critic, at the same time indirectly saw to it that I did well and would be very proud. We need to have more tournaments in his memory. He was the greatest Physical Director St. Aloysius ever had.

During his tenure he saw to it that sports developed in South Kanara. Good to see Donnett Sir and Benjamin Sir's Son Jerald carry on the work which Benjamin Sir started. Good luck to you both. May Benjamin Sir's soul rest in peace...We miss you SIR.

Each year a new building comes up within the campus of St Aloysius college, but the sports grounds seem to be disappearing. The hockey ground which was Benja sir's life & blood has today become a car park. The love for sports and games seems to be waning amongst today's students who have their laptops and play stations. They hardly indulge in any physical exercise. During our time all the grounds from the middle school to the college used to be filled with students until 6:30PM, playing games like hockey, football, cricket, basketball or volley ball. We used to look forward to the evening bell to rush into the grounds. Benja sir must be rolling in his grave at today's sorry state of affairs.

Delighted that SAC management memorizes the contribution of Sir Benjamin D'souza! I was upset seeing the hockey ground converted into car park but this too was essential. Confident his son Gerald will accomplish the great sportsman’s vision.

Great Physical Director ! A true sports lover and one of the best physical directors ever to come out of Mangalore for sure. I had the privelege of playing with him at various times and he even took a lot of interest in helping other organisers involved in tournaments. I especially remember his help when he used to come to Suratkal almost every day when I organised the first ever flood lit State Level Volleyball Tournament in Suratkal way back in 1992.

He appreciated the idea and wanted the tournament to be a success. Sir Benjamin was one of the few dedicated coaches for whom nurturing talent and making winning teams was the sole mission in life. It is indeed a noble gesture to honour this great personality by having a tournament in his name.

At last!!!!! It indeed is high time that we start identifying the contributions of our physical instructors. Late Benjamin sir was a true role model. He moulded many sportsmen from our school. If I remember while I was studying in St Aloysius, we had so many play grounds meant for many sports activities & Benjamin sir was the one who motivated students to take up sports in varied areas. Be it football, hockey, athletics and many other activities. During his time our school was the hockey champions and was indeed in the forfront of many other sports. Infact many other school students used to shiver competing with our school. If I am going to write about Benjamin Sir, this list will go on and on. So I will end this requesting schools to give more leverage to their PT instructors to get more sporting talent out of the students. God bless his soul!!!!

Benja Sir will be missed for his dedication, vision and hard work in tranforming sports not only at St.Aloysius College,Mangalore but also at the University and state level. I am sure all will agree with me that if you were alive today the present hockey ground would not have been converted into a car parking. You will never be forgotten for your words"first fifteen mts run and attack". Sir you will be dearly missed.

Absolutely, he is great sports personality in D.K., big supporter of sports especially to poor students. Also active member of all sports associations of D.K. His dedication towards sports was great...I could see his son Santhosh who is also good hockey player, will continue his mission in sports. I wish this tournament all the best

Honours Well deserved for the former SAC Physical Director Benjamin D'Souza. He was all in all in the physical grounds of SAC for decades for hundreds of budding sportsmen. Jesuit management deserves appreciation for this noble gesture.
