Mangalore Church attacks: Acharya Promises Withdrawal of Cases against Christians
From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network

Bangalore, Oct 29: Karnataka’s home minister Dr V S Acharya has promised to withdraw cases registered against Christian youth in connection with the series of attacks against Churches in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi districts and other places last year.

He made the promise after receiving a memorandum seeking withdrawal of cases and issue necessary directions to the Corps of Detectives (CoD) and Inspector General of Police to file `B’ reports for closure by a delegation led by International Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations (IFKCA) Ronald Colaco, which was strongly supported by BJP’s Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and former union minister Dhananjaya Kumar, state government’s special representative in Delhi and four-term MP from Mangalore.

Federation of Konkani Catholic Associations (FKCA) chairman Charles Gomes and its former chairman Valerian R Fernandes and Gabriel Vaz, former Political Editor of The Economic Times, Bangalore and Special Correspondent of Daijiworld in Bangalore, were part of the delegation. Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa’s legal adiviser K Diwakara was also present on the occasion when the delegation on the home minister at his official residence.

Pointing out that the government was fully aware of the background and special circumstances, Dr Acharya said any decision on withdrawal of cases can be taken only after the B K Somashekar judicial inquiry commission, instituted by the government to probe all incidents of church attacks in the state, submitted its report. The charge-sheets must also be filed before the state cabinet can take any decision on withdrawal of cases, he said.

The home minister, however, made it clear that the government expected the Somashekar commission to submit its interim report by the end of this month. ``There is no question of extending the term of the commission beyond another three months, which is the maximum duration that can be given,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, official sources mentioned that the government was unhappy with the unduly delay and heavy expenditure incurred by the commission. While the Jagannath Shetty commission that probed the Haveri police firing against farmers agitating over the scarcity of fertilisers and agricultural seeds soon after the BJP’s government came to power in May last year had already submitted its final report incurring an expenditure of less than Rs 25 lakh, the expenditure on the Somashekar commission instituted to probe into the church attack cases and other related issues as more than Rs 1.25 crore without any result, the sources said.

The IFKCA and FKCA delegation led by Ronald Colaco and Charles Gomes, in its memorandum, impressed upon the home minister the urgency of withdrawal of cases registered against Christian youth. ``This would enable the Christian youth and the community to live as peace-loving and law-abiding citizens apart reassuring their safety, security and dignity,’’ the memorandum said reminding Dr Acharya his promise during the FKCA Day celebrations held at St Joseph’s Boys School grounds in Bangalore on February 1 this year in the presence of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and Bangalore Archbishop Bernard Moras.

The memorandum reminded the government of the role of Christian community in the field of education, social service and healthcare, especially treatment of leprosy patients, orphans and mentally retarded people and other destitute. The well-planned and systematic attacks against churches and the wanton destruction and desecration of statues, holy books and religious vestments and other religious symbols in Mangalore, Kuloor, Udupi,  Kundapur, Karkal,  Mudabidri, Belthangady, Kodikal, Chikmagalur, Koppa, Balehonnur, Bangalore and other places on September 14, 2008 and subsequently had deeply hurt the Christians.

"After witnessing or learning about the horrifying persecution, that too after a prolonged and persistent harassment, attacks on priests and nuns and places of worship, which had angered the Christians, who on earth can remain quiet and calm bearing the pain and insult?,’’ the memorandum asked pointing out that some of the hurt people ``came out on the streets to express their sorrow and anguish’’ and demanded immediate action and arrest of the miscreants. ``Is this wrong and a crime?,’’ it asked.

The memorandum also took strong exception to the partisan or ineffective role of police, who went to the extent of entering the churches, residences of priests and nuns as also convent schools, dragging and mercilessly beating people as if they were hardcore criminals and terrorists. It also sought to debunk the bogey of conversion, which is conveniently used to persecute Christians, and made it clear that ``there can only be voluntary and self-desired conversion from one religion to another’’ but no forced conversion.

"The Christian population accounts for barely 2% of the country’s total population as per the 2001 census. If the Christians were to resort to conversions through their tens of thousands of educational and other institutions, managed by missionaries, priests and nuns, some of which being 130 or 140 year old, the Christian population should have touched at least 50% assuming conversions of 1% or 2% every year and would not have come down from 2.43% to 2.25% in 2001,’’ the memorandum said.

Even if some people have voluntarily converted from Hinduism to Christianity, the memorandum said there have cases of Christians embracing Hinduism or other groups or following Rajneesh, Sathya Sai Baba, Hare-Rama-Hare-Krishna, ISKON and other movements besides helping in the building of temples, schools and other institutions. ``Let us understand each other better, live in peace, dignity and communal harmony and work unitedly to transform the country into an economic super power,’’ it added.

Christians and their Churches were attacked by anti-social goons of the society. But the Christians were trapped as criminals. Mangalore is well known as an educated city, but in the court system under the BJP government is indeed the "jungle laws" of the forest people, when dealing with the minorities.

Dr. Acharya knows very well, who is innocent and who is the culprit, but still he has to wait for Somashekar commission report. We are a society willingly contributing to the development of hard core criminals by punishing innocents.

Once they enter the jail there is no looking back for them, they learn all criminal moves from jail like Mohan Kumar. People who have not seen police station or court are being subjected to the sufferings of lock up and jail depriving from their education and livelihood. Reason is for protesting against hooliganism and destruction of religious places. How on earth can police enter any convent and charge at nuns with baton, who indulge only in prayers, education and healthcare. Some of the ministers were justifying that attack against the Church is because of forcible conversion, which no body could prove till date. Mistaken identity and mistaken action is another statement from a minister. This means, they have been told to identify someone for the action by the government, isn’t it?

Dear Rajesh how much you respect for the Law, I can just make it out from your appeal to Home Minister. How the christian youth were arrested? What made them to gather in the worship place? How the incidents were handled by our so called famous Police officials? Were there only Police People while raiding the church premises? There were Goondas also who helped them to raid , beat and arrest innocent Christian youth. You could have asked one question with Police Department how many culprits they have arrested for attacking the chuches in various places? Our inteligent officers could not book single person who started all these disturbances in and around Mangalore. Think once again dear friend.

You still try to collect the bits and pieces from there and rebuild the tower called BJP still those cracks are visible, the outward show will disappear and moreover the foundation is still weak, one gust of air will make your tower collapse to ground. No use of repairing now, wake up from your sleep, jump out of your collapsing tower before it is too late, else you will also be trapped inside shouting Jai ho BJP, Jai ho Yediyurappaji, Jai ho Advaniji and so on. Only couple of days left for this episode.

Nagesh Nayak, Bangalore, Congress is playing neat and thoughtful politics otherwise BJP wouldn’t have lost even in Maharastra. They are delaying just because of a planned vision and mission which BJP still not aware of. Otherwise “Yeddy- Reddy” fight may not on road, huge lose in Maharastra, cold wars against minorities etc. BJP thinks flood relief funds are lottery for them. They didn’t even know what will be the result and gift from the public when the next (unfortunately coming soon) election appears. They had huge opportunity to show something difference in south India now they completely out of control. South India is not their cup of tea forget it. I bet BJP can not smell the seat in central and south India at least for another 20 years and take my words. Gladson Brahmavar, I appreciate you.

Few in this forum have asked 'What case against christians'. Here it is -Christians had gathered to defend their place of worship at various churches. Efficient(60 women missing and we don't know fame)police of Mangalore, entered the churches and battered the nuns, women and children. Feeling ashamed and to cover up their act, they captured some youth from among them, and booked them under various sections - only they know the right ones. Hope sometime soon, some christians will pool their resources and make a movie to show the world the 'Story of Emerging Mangalore'. The right answer to the atroicities on charitable christians is, put the criminals, those who abet them, and those who protect them, into utter shame for generations, globally.

A perfect item number which has made all those who were present popular overnight! Only time will tell as who are the beneficiaries of this move. Whether it is Dr Acharya and BJP, the young Christian boys facing the cases, the attackers or the delegation which submitted the memorandum reap fruits of this exercise, is a thing of future.

But I strongly believe that right from Dr Acharya to BJP to Nalin Kumar to the delegation which led the move, are not only late but also selfish, doing for their own gain. Can we believe Dr Acharya as home minister? His track record for the last one year is neither promising nor praiseworthy. Nalin Kumar's role into the those attacks cannot either be discharged given the fact that he has been one of the most leading faces of saffron brigade in DK for long. Dhananjaya Kumar is surely an item number now. Used as spare part most of the time to fix broken pieces. While no one can doubt the integrety and capacity of these people led by Mr Colaco, they may have to answer a few questions regarding the timing of this move. BJP's ship is almost sinking (sorry stinking).

With writing clearly on the wall about the future of govt, it has to do some urgent patch work, if they think of coming to power again, in case of mid-term poll. Reddy-Yeddy who are fighting for the ownership of cheddy have stirred up the water, which has surely thrown an opportunity for many to fish in the muddy waters. Who will net the prized fish but? Only time has answer!!

The Sangh Parivar had already shaken the binding fabrics of Hindu-Christian unity. It takes a very long period of time to gain confident but very easy to destroy it. The Sangh Parivar just destroyed the trust of non-Hindus in India which is very difficult to built in a short period and that will effect our economy & foreign policies. Majority of the Muslims are anti-social elements because they are pushed to the wall and the Sangh parivar wanted to treat all the Non-Hindus like SCs/STs. Unfortunately, even SCs/STs will over power them in the period of time and that is the naked truth.

Is there any derth of competent lawyers in the christian community? There should be more pressure to complete the enquiry and speedy judgement to complete the case instead of begging the minister who inturn is a party to this crime by not acting suitably.

While appreciating above ALL people’s initiative YET timing of such good work just prior to submitting the report by B K Somashekar judicial inquiry commission is deeply questionable. Had all above people taken initiative seriously much earlier, by this time innocent youths would have been reprieved from all the different cases registered against them. Former chief minister of Tamil Nadu Mrs. Jayalalitha brought forward conversion law in Tamil Nadu State. The lone Muslim supporter for conversion law was promoted as minister berth in her cabinet then there followed general elections for Lock Sabha and her party failed miserably. After the failure only she realized the anti conversion law defeated her from the part and she withdrew anti conversion law from the Tamil Nadu state. Now Mr. Acharya is feeling the heat of his party leadership in Karnataka and perhaps wanted to show some sympathy to christians. He is refreshing very lately. If he will be in power for some time he will understand how the administration will be but still he is naive in Politics and administration.
