Mangaluru: Two cases of kidney transplants at Father Muller’s showcase humanity

Mangaluru, Mar 16: Two cases of heart touching generosity were witnessed at the Father Muller Medical College Hospital where recently two kidney transplants took place.

One of the cases involved Immanuel (35) hailing from Hassan who was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease in 2018 was referred to FMMCH. His family consisted of bedridden father, his homemaker mother Jayasheela and a 5-year-old child.

The mother Jayasheela (58) voluntarily showed her willingness to donate her kidney to her son who was sick. Necessary procedures and protocols were followed as per the Government Directives for a related kidney transplant. The transplant was conducted on December 1, 2019, and discharged on February 28.

Sr Irene Laldinmawii, serving in congregation of Ursaline Sisters was diagnosed with CKD. Sr Aurea D’Souza (66) of Holy Rosary Covent at Jeppu was moved at Sr Irene’s plight, that she made a great revelation by donating her kidney for the health of her former student Sr Irene.

This allograft procedure required tireless efforts by the team of doctors and precise documentation and verifications. On verification in Bengaluru at the State Operation Committee Human Organ Transplant, the officer exclaimed that it was the 'first time such a case unfolded, where a religious donated her organ to another religious with the sole intent of helping. This is the mercy of God', the transplant took place on February 16 and discharged on March 6.

The medical superintendent FMMCH, Dr Uday Kumar extended his support and cooperation to the team as and when required, holding internal hospital committee meetings to ascertain clean and honest transplant between the donor and the recipients.

The Father Muller Medical College Hospital has time and again tried to spread awareness of organ donation. The Father Muller Hospital has its transplant coordinators with the District Organ Transplant Commission Dr Kelvin Peter Pais (Liaison Officer) and Reshma Carol D’Sa who is a liaison between the hospital and the district body which is under the DC of Mangaluru.

FMCI requests people to come forward to donate organs or the organs of the brain dead cases for the suffering. The Father Muller Medical College Hospital puts on record its thanks and heartfelt appreciation to its staff and team of transplant surgeons and technicians for being at the patients care, with less of self and more of service. This is the fifth kidney transplant done in the Father Muller Medical College Hospital.
