Mangaluru, Apr 12: Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Union has written to the chief minister seeking the release of a special fund for the media which played a stellar role in spreading awareness about coronavirus disease.
"We are highly appreciative of the efforts being made by our chief minister to save the lives of people from this pandemic because of his concern for the people. We hail you for the way you have been responding to the pains and pleasures of the people by fighting against coronavirus because of which the disease is under control now. We always support the functioning style you have adopted for the safety and security of the people. We appreciate the government for announcing health relief fund for the doctors, paramedical staff and the police who work for the people.
However, it is common knowledge that the media plays a major role in spreading awareness about coronavirus among the people. The media has been creating such an awareness since the first week of March this year. The media has been educating the people about the importance and compulsions relating to the implementation of any decision the government took relating to this issue. In spite of lockdown conditions, the media persons are overlooking danger to their lives and working hard to spread awareness about this disease, the union pointed out.
A number of journalists live a life of hardship even now. In spite of hardships in their personal lives, they have been spreading awareness about coronavirus without bothering about the interests of their families. Therefore, the journalists union through a letter urged the chief minister to extend benefits of health relief fund to even the journalists so that it can give rise to a sense of self-confidence and determination in their minds.
President of Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Union Srinivas Nayak expressed the confidence that the chief minister will uphold this demand and announce relief fund for the journalists.
