Bengaluru, Aug 1: State governor, Vajubhai Vala, suggested to the state government to ban distribution and sale of gutkha packets and paan masala in the state as there have been incidents of selling drugs by packing them in gutkha sachets.

He made this suggestion to the chief minister, B S Yediyurappa, and home minister, Basavaraj Bommai, who met him on Friday. The chief minister, in response, promised to take action. A release from the Raj Bhavan stated that the chief minister has informed that if a need is felt, the same would be enforced through an ordinance.

The governor pointed out that there have been instances in which drugs were transported in gutkha, paan masala and tobacco sachets. Expressing concern about this development, he said that because of this, students and young people fall prey to drug habit. He suggested to the chief minister to place a ban on their use.

Yediyurappa, on his return from the Raj Bhavan, instructed the home minister, Basavaraj Bommai, to take further steps, it is learnt.
