Udupi: Prof C N Sreedharan of MIT passes away at age of 89

Udupi, Aug 25: Professor C N Sreedharan, popularly known as Prof CNS, joined MIT Manipal as a faculty member in the department of mathematics in the year 1959 and served for a very long period of 35 years until his retirement in 1994.

An exceptional teacher and a role model to all students and teachers alike, was one of the founding faculty members of MEC/MIT, Manipal.

As the news of his passing away reached his students across the world, his students and colleagues were shocked to hear that their beloved teacher Prof CNS passed away on August 23 at about 1.40 pm at his younger daughter Srisudha's home in Ernakulum, Kerala. Aged 89, Prof C N Sreedharan lived a very active life until the end.

Being a voracious reader, excellent orator, and a charismatic teacher, Prof C N Sreedharan was an adorable personality at MIT Manipal for a very long period. CNS was very friendly and approachable to all students and faculty colleagues. He was instrumental in institute building from the very early years of MEC/MIT Manipal. He was also responsible for bringing vibrancy to campus and student activities on the campus.

As block warden in the hostels, he had a keen eye on quality improvement in living as well as dining facilities. As a faculty advisor to college student magazine for many years, he has set the benchmark for the batches to follow. He had also served as a chairman for the Literary and Debate club and engaged himself in grooming the students as an all-round personality.

Identifying the need for formally grooming the teachers, Prof Sreedharan founded and led the Continuing Education Department at the institute. He initiated the Faculty Development and Induction program to nurture the teaching skills of many teachers besides giving particular emphasis on developing the teaching skills among the newly joined faculty members. He was a real role model for the faculty members, and even today, many faculty members at MIT cherish the interaction with him and the learnings from him.

Professor C N Sreedharan used to be very conscious about quality and discipline. Being an upright person himself, he used to inculcate the integrity and professionalism among the faculty and student he had an opportunity to interact with, with his unique and pleasing way. It is a fact that he could positively impact many faculty and students during his service at MIT Manipal.

We pray to the almighty to give strength and courage to the bereaved family and his near and dear ones to bear the irreparable loss. May his soul rest in peace," a press release stated.
