Bengaluru, Aug 27: With the ruling BJP in Karnataka getting ready for the forthcoming crucial elections to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for which revision of electoral voters’ list is presently underway, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has been keeping himself busy inaugurating several projects in different parts of the city.

The Chief Minister unveiled a plaque renaming the already existing Ananda Rao Circle flyover near the busy Majestic area, which links the Western parts of the city with the central business district, after the 19th Century chieftain Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna, who valiantly fought against the British.

It may be recalled that the flyover was planned by the Bengaluru Development Authority way back in 2004 and completed in 2006. The flyover with a carriageway of 647 metres in length and 14 metres in width has been in service since 2006.

The Chief Minister announced the decision to rename the flyover after Sangolli Rayanna on Republic Day.

Yediyurappa garlanded the image of Sangolli Rayanna and unveiled the plaque renaming the flyover on Thursday.

Incidentally, Sangolli Rayanna is considered an iconic leader of the backward Kuruba community to which former Chief Minister and Congress Opposition leader Siddaramaiah and BJP leader and Minister K S Eswarappa as well as Vishwanath, who quit JD(S) to join BJP before the collapse of the H D Kumaraswamy-led Congress-JD(S) coalition regime.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr C N Ashwatha Narayana, who is the Higher Education Minister, Urban Development Minister Byarathi Basavaraj, Congress leader Dinesh Gundu Rao, who represents the Gandhinagar assembly constituency, BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad and Mayor Gautam Kumar participated in the function.

The Chief Minister, earlier, release a book on the one-year achievements the Tourism, Kannada and Culture Department.

Tourism, Kannada and Culture Minister C T Ravi, Chief Secretary T M Vijaya Bhaskar, KSTDC chairperson Shruti, Youth Empowerment and Sports Department Secretary Kalpana and other senior officials attended the function.
