Want JEE, NEET postponed, not cancelled: Maha minister

Mumbai, Aug 28 (IANS): Maharashtra Minister for Higher and Technical Education, Uday R. Samant has said he welcomes the Supreme Court verdict on holding the JEE, NEET examinations.

However, the minister - who is among ministers from six states who have moved the apex court for a review of its earlier order - said Maharashtra had never asked for cancelling the examinations, but only sought to defer them till a more opportune time.

In their review petition, the ministers from various non-BJP ruled states - Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Punjab - plan to raise several issues that may impede the smooth and safe conduct of the JEE, NEET exams, scheduled for September 30.

"We never wanted to cancel the exams, we wanted it to be postponed for a suitable time in view of the Covid-19 crisis," Samant told mediapersons.

In view of the latest development, he said the state government will consult universities and students on the issue and then decide how to go about implementing the SC order.

"We respect the SC verdict. We shall take into account the health and safety concerns of the students before deciding how to conduct the exams," said Samant.

On Thursday, the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi partners - Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party and Congress - had urged the Centre to consider postponing the exams in view of the pandemic lockdown that would make it difficult for candidates to reach exam venues, besides exposing them to the risk of coronavirus.

Earlier, state Tourism Minister Aditya Thackeray had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention in the matter in view of the health concerns of students and their families.

My dear Minister, If your demand is need to be considered and the Exam need to be postponed, one big question is when it can be held. Do you know when the pandemic will end. Even the WHO has informed that this pandemic may go on for another two years. Hope it is not. Do you have any concrete proof when the pandemic will end, please give . Second option is to postpone till there is a approved vaccine in place. For that also no correct timing when it can be available is not known. O.K let us assume that the vaccine will come to market at the end of this year. Then another big question is how much qty of it will be available in India and whom to vaccinate first. O.k if you are the final decision making person and take decision to vaccinate all the candidates First, then when this process will complete. Is it feasible or possible. No it is impossible. So considering the past experience exams for all which is directly having the implications on the students must be held in time without postponing. You take the example of SSLC Exams in Karnataka. There was lot of opposition( from a portion) from all angels including the students parents . But Govt took a decision and conducted the exam and it was a big success. No one spoke about it afterwards because it was a grand success. No students died on account of contracting the virus by attending the exam. So dont worry my dear Minister, Govt and the department holding the exam will take due care and safe measure to guard the health of students and make a way for their good future. We need to live with Corona which will be a new normal. Let us fight and beat the virus.
