Mangaluru: Mangalore University draws up plan to tackle drug menace among youth

Mangaluru, Sep 17: Syndicate members of Mangalore University, Ravichandra P M and Ramesh K, addressed a joint press conference, here, on Thursday September 17.

"Today, the drug issue is on the rise and unfortunately the students are victims of drugs. We have witnessed several cases where drugs led to suicide among youth. Taking a serious view of these developments, added effort to create awareness about the drugs within the university jurisdiction will be held. The university syndicate meeting will discuss this issue in particular and plan of action will be drawn," they said.

"We have also formed committees in every college to address this issue and strengthen the committee effectively. NSS and NCC will also be trained to create awareness on drugs. Awareness of drugs such as awareness programme, forming a taskforce, demanding stringent law against drugs from the government. It is not only the duty of the police and the government but also of the public to collectively work on it."

 

 

To spread awareness about the adverse effects of drugs the following plan will be carried out:

1. Student awareness meetings at the beginning of the academic year
2. A definite plan of action to be drawn up in the colleges
3. Undertaking people's awareness programmes by joining hands with voluntary organizations
4. Requesting state government to enforce stricter laws.
5. Students to take a pledge not to consume drugs but to spread awareness about drugs
6. Exhibition of documentaries on the adverse effects of drugs
7. Every alert citizen should respond to the drug menace, without leaving the issue in the hands of the police and government alone. Police to be provided with prompt information to avoid future problems
9. The drug trade has links with treason. Protecting people in this business is equal to treason. It should be stringently punished.
10. Intelligentsia, leaders, writers, religious leaders and others, have to sink their party and other differences and make efforts to form people's opinion against drugs. Student leaders, teachers, educationalists etc should cooperate in ridding society of drugs.
