Writer stages 20-Hour protest as Jeweller refuses to speak in Marathi

Mumbai, Oct 9: A writer staged a 20- hour protest after a jeweller allegedly refused to speak in the Marathi language and also told her to leave where she had gone to make a purchase.

Marathi writer Shobha Deshpande protested overnight on the footpath outside his shop. Later the jeweller apologised to the writer. Deshpande was later taken to a hospital by police for a medical check-up.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) supported the writer and warned the jeweller that he will not be able to open his shop until he learns Marathi.MNS workers also allegedly slapped the jeweller.

Deshpande has said that she had gone to the jewellery shop in Colaba, south Mumbai, to buy earrings, during purchase she jeweller to speak to her in Marathi, the jeweller said he cannot speak in Marathi.

Deshpande said "Since I did not speak in Hindi, he refused to sell me the earrings. He arrogantly asked me to leave the place."
