Karnataka Waiting for Medical Council Nod for 413 Seats in 5 Colleges


Bangalore, Jun 26 (PTI): The Karnataka government is hopeful of obtaining approval from Medical Council of India (MCI) for admission in regard to 413 seats in five medical colleges in the state by this month-end.  
 
Minister for Medical Education Ramachandra Gowda said a total of 1,780 MBBS seats are available for students in different medical colleges under the Government quota.

Of them, MCI has not approved admission of students for 413 seats in five medical colleges. The MCI had not given approval for admission for 100 seats each in Government medical colleges in Raichur, Bidar and Shimoga, 50 seats in Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hubli, and 63 seats in S S Medical College, Davanagere, he told reporters.

MCI was expected to give the green signal for admission for 413 seats by June 30. The entire process of inspections by MCI teams would be completed in a couple of days. These seats would be filled in the second round of counselling.

The number of seats filled under the government quota in 2007-08 was 1993 seats, 1817 seats in 2008-09, and 1871 seats in 2009-10, he said.In the first round of counselling, no eligible candidates were found for 38 seats. Of these seats, 36 were allotted for physically challenged, one each for Scheduled Caste rural category and Anglo-Indian. These seats would be shifted to general category in the second round, Gowda said.
