Mangalore Jul 6: The tepid response to the request and recommendations of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) reduces the commission into a toothless tiger, said People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) president P B D’Sa.

Addressing presspersons on Tuesday July 6 D’Sa said that the government response to SHRC is up to the mark as the government itself is violating the human rights in our state. The SHRC should be strengthened with more powers and it should make its own investigations into citizen’s complaint through highly professional agencies or CBI as the police mostly do not respond to any cases.

PUCL vice-president M Kabeer said that if the police are not investigating any issue, a complaint is given to the higher officials or district courts. But finally the investigation lies with the same officials, who discharge their work in a similar manner, he noted.

Vice-president of PUCL Walter Maben, treasurer Suresh Bhat Bakrebail and member Alvyn Colaco were present.
