Kundapur, Jul 8: In an incident that occurred on the night of Tuesday July 6 at Huyyar in Halady village of Kundapur taluk, a gang, members of which posed as naxals, barged into a house, threatened the inmates, and took away gold ornaments and cash totally worth Rs 2.25 lac. The victim has been identified as Anantapadmanabha Udupa. In addition to Udupa, his wife, son and parents were at home at the time.

Reportedly, six persons armed with pistols and other lethal weapons, approached the house of Udupa, located in a secluded place. While four entered the house, two stood guard outside. “They said they were naxals and asked for food. After  I informed the gang that we did not have food, they threatened me and asked me to hand over cash and gold ornaments. Feeling frightened, I obliged. They completed the task within 15 minutes and escaped into darkness,” Udupa said in his complaint.

He also said that the two gang members standing outside his house, severed the telephone connection of the house, while the gang took away telephone instrument and mobile. They held pistols, some other arms which looked like pistols, steel pipes, cudgels and knives, he explained.

After a complaint was filed in Halady police station on Wednesday, sniffer dogs and finger print experts visited the spot. Police protection has been provided to Udupa. The policemen believe that it was not the handiwork of naxals, as they are not normally known to rob people. While it is the normal practice of the naxals to ask for food, their other activities include strewing of hand bills and raising of slogans. As this gang did nothing of this sort, the policemen strongly feel that the visitors were thieves posing as naxals.
