Kundapur, Jul 9: President of All India Konkani Parishad, Dr H Shantaram, lamented the lack of interest among the students from Konkani-speaking communities towards learning Konkani language. He called upon the elders to educate the children about the culture, refinement, traditions and ways of life of Konkani people, to create among the youngsters an awareness about the richness of the language.

He was speaking after presiding over the 72nd foundation day of All India Konkani Parishad organized at the hall of Hotel Sharon here on Thursday July 8.

He noted that several things remain to be explored in Konkani literature. “The youngsters are reluctant to know and observe the festivals and holy occasions as per our customs. We should develop keenness about our language and be proud about it. The parents should encourage their children to learn Konkani language since a young age,” he advised.

Konkani encyclopedia editor, Dr Tanaji Harlankar in his address, dwelt about Konkani language, efforts being made by Konkani Parishad to bring people together and popularize the language through Sahitya Academy, Konkani programmes on Doordarshan and Akashvani, etc.

Udupi zilla panchayat president, Gladys D Almeida, inaugurated the programme. U S Shenoy, president of Jai Konkani organization, delivered introductory address. Jnaneshwar, Gokuldas Prabhu, and R S Bhaskar of All India Konkani Sahitya Parishad were present. Hundreds of people from Kerala, Maharsahtra, Karnataka and Goa participated.
