Udupi: Limit NH 17 Width to 45 m - Samiti

Udupi, Jul 11 (The Hindu): The Udupi-Dakshina Kannada Districts National Highway 17 Evacuees' Committee has demanded that the width of NH 17, which is being converted into a four-lane road from Surathkal to Kundapur, be restricted to 45 metres.

Convener of the committee Ramdas Nayak told presspersons here on Saturday that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) would be converting the 76-km stretch between Surathkal and Kundapur and the 195-km stretch between Kundapur and Karwar to four lanes with a width of 60 m.

Terming the policy of NHAI discriminatory, he said the people of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts would not accept it. At a recent meeting held in Bangalore, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had directed the NHAI officials to restrict the width of the highway to 45 m in urban areas and 60 m in rural areas. However, the officials had begun acquiring land for 60-m highway, he said.

Delegation

Hence, a delegation of the committee would meet Mr. Yeddyurappa on July 15 and impress upon him the need to keep the width of NH 17 in these two districts to 45 m.

If necessary, the committee would take a delegation to New Delhi also, Mr. Nayak said.

Members of the committee Sukhananda Shenoy, Panduranga Kini, Sheela Shetty and A. Mendonca were among those present.

You do not know our AUTHORITIES. They are clever. If they touch 1 centimeter in urben area same day the (responsible) person will be transfered. Or in the news paper you will read suicide ....? see they will not touch some of communities, places, THEY NEED ONLY BAKRAS... presently we read Patrao's... Now, The problem is for those who build posh houses near the main road. They earned in gulf counties saved money and build houses for the family etc... 2. Presently is it posible to earn like before ? Gulf people are retuning back thinking they have atleast one house. All people suffer like another patrao. No unity. you see jason.. How many catholic panchayat elected members came to help Mr Patrao? They gathered one place we garlended them. Now all in KUMBAKARNAS Sleep.

Nh 17 priority is for smooth transportation, not for banglows or for commercial business. Even for that there is service road provision. U cant give access for every house on NH. Many have acquired Nh 17.
60 mts is the minimum required.

NH-17 has been so for donkeys years, atleast they are planning to widen it now. It will take another generation to implement what is being just a discussion today. And more over it will even take even more time to relocate so many dwellings along the way. Hope the management solves all the issues and start ASAP. Just waiting to see a 4 track NH-17 Highway before I die.Hope my dreams come true.

Praveen,If that the case we don't need these kind of projects. If you want to see development then people have to make a move. Govt officials cannot do any progress because of people like you with your narrow mentality, and you are the ones blaming officials for the under-development. Guys THINK BIG

Here also story is same like Mangalore Airport. For protecting few people, top brass will fight and change the whole project. You can see NH 17 had taken so many curves from Udupi to Mangalore, only due to avoid / protect properties of top guns. There is no vision for future. Lets prepare our place for future generation.

Hi Jason, you do not understand problems and suffocations of normal people living in both sides of this proposed roads construction. People have their houses and if 60 meters happenes, everyone has to move and stay on tents somewhere on hills. You are not bothered to send any help from US. Are you ???

Shouldn't it be the other way around? In urban areas there is more traffic more road width is required hence 60 meters is justified. In rural areas 45 meters width is probably ok (for the time being). But it seems, our short-sighted netas want it the other way round. Total lack of vision by our elected representatives.
