Mangalore Jul 12: A vintage rally of Jawa and Yezdi motor bikes was organized by ‘Forever Riders’ in the city on Sunday July 11. The vehicles which participated in the rally were flagged off from City Gate, Tollgate, Kadri here. The rally ended at the starting point after the participating bikes touched Tannirbavi beach and whizzed back.

Speaking to Daijiworld on this occasion, Shawn Fernandes said the club, ‘Forever Riders’, had been set up by him here in 1996 along with another founder, Arun. “In the first year, only three riders participated in the rally, and the number swelled to 15 last year,” he explained.

He revealed that the second Sunday of July each year is being celebrated all over India as Jawa and Yezdi Day, to commemorate the rolling out of the first ever Java motor cycle in India by Ideal Jawa Pvt Ltd. The company, which had its manufacturing unit in Mysore, later acquired the name, ‘Yezdi’, he stated.

Vincent Pinto, who is a national level winner, has been a regular participant of this rally. He has won over 150 trophies including this rally. He said, Yezdi continues to be his favourite motor cycle.

Two riders from Kodagu district had come to the city to participate in this rally. On arrival in the city, they were given a warm welcome.

Over 40 riders darted off from the starting point with their Yezdi and Jawa motor bikes. As the vehicles touched Tannirbavi and roared back to the starting point, the city reverberated with the sound of the revving motor cycle engines.

Jawa is a motorcycle manufacturer based in the Czech Republic, which was formerly known as Czechoslovakia. The company set up its manufacturing unit in India in collaboration with a local company, 1961. Jawa motorcycles had touched the heights of glory when they occupied a place of pride in the two-wheeler scenario in the country, and when the youth felt that owning a Yezdi motor bike was a question of prestige, till a few decades ago.

    Denzil,

Concern and contribution are two different aspects. One can show concern when something is happening next door but without any positive contribtion it is meaningless. But think on a personal front and judge if you or Kumar is eligible to talk about it?

Green policy issue does not arise from Yezdi or other vehicles of ~5.7L alone. It also comes from other means such as KIOCL, MCF, MRPL (though it produces, it also suffers green policy), mangalore Port, Baikampady estates, fisheries etc etc.

More interestingly, if one observes at home, you are left with no choice than spoiling the eco system. Plastic Bags, Paper usage, disposable pastic or non-degradable thermo-cups-plates used at home are deadly to Eco and can only contribute to Vamanjoor heap.

So, why talk about Yezdi and why not look at personal life style, where Green policy is not obeyed.

BTW, when Iraq was attacked with thousands of missiles, the thermal impact that caused by the USA is never questioned by any. Same goes to Afghan where age-old missile etc were used to clear the stock-pile. So melting of North pole has something to do with Bush poicy.

Target the man who can stop melting, not Yezdi owners.

Its good to see all the warm comments here. Thank you especially Pramukh & Vishwamitra for extending your warm support to this event!

Its understandable to be concerned about the environment and if one would care to observe, most of the motorcycles here have been lovingly restored right down to the silencers. During this process, the silencers are cleaned and all carbon deposits from inside are burnt out totally. And after that, the mufflers are put back to reduce smoke and noise emission as much as possible! At least most of us did! All our bikes were emission tested with results well within the specified norms. The final smoke emission may be noticeable but is practically negligible when it is compared with other polluting catalysts!
But the reason of displaying these lovely machines is to show the beauty that once was and if there are people who own them, in the event of disposing them, please do not dump them in a scrapyard. While offering a transportation medium (maybe at a premium), they also offer a feel of raw power, comfort and style unequaled by today's bikes.
Our intention is not to pollute the world but to preserve a thing of beauty!
    Thank you!

Kumar, your concern is a valid one. But imagine about those who go around in 5700cc odd SUVs in the States and the Gulf. They have melted our North Pole. A Yezdi is nothing.

Yet, I agree that such jolly rides in Mangalore are unjustifiable.

Nice to see the Yezdis roaring on the roads! :) I own an Yezdi since 25yrs and no other bike gives the adrenaline rush as Yezdi. It is still one of the most maintainence free bikes. I hardly spend any amount on its maintainence, still it gives me good performance and a decent mileage of 35.

    Mr. Fernandes,
I bow my head to your concern, but there are 1000's of other ways to reduce CO emmission and have a green, peaceful environment. This event is held once in a year with just 40bikes, the amount of CO emmisions is negligable compared to the CO emmisions that is happening around us.

    Long Live the RoadKing!

Great vintage motorcycle rally but few of the riders and co-riders are not wearing helmets. Rallies like this must be an example to obey the traffic rules and there should not be any use. Hope the organizers take note of this in future. Better safe riding.

Arun CK, there is a bike mechanic Mr. Sathish, doing bike repairs under the tree on the road between St.Agnes College and Mallikatte. His garage under the tree is on the right side of the road just after you pass the circle near Vas Bakery going towards Mallikatte. Whenever I go on vacation, he is the one who gets my Yezdi back on the road and he has been maintaining my bike from the day I bought it 1987. Missed the rally.

I understand your worry Mr. Kumar Fernandes, Mudarangadi/ Dubai.

This rally is happening once a year.

What about so many vehicles ply over daily polluting air?

Do you have any alternative option for that? Or would you say let them go to some thick forest area!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Arun CK

Maintaining an old vehicle is not an easy job. One has to kick-start the engine every now and then to make sure everything is viscous. Moreover the spares are scarce for these, this is where the trouble begins.

It is worth to restore the vehicle only when it is old (say sixities or the earlier models). Yezdis of over 10 yeras may be readily available in the market at a cheaper price than restoring it.
But dont get discouraged. Please visit "www.team-bhp.com" and enroll yourself for solving your doubts.

    Kumar Fernandes, Dubai

I am not sure, what makes you to be upset of this vintage rally. Please take it sportively. People have different means of sport or entertainment, some go for F1, some for vintage rally, some use vehicles for jolly ride, and some for stunt as in circus, some for family or official or trade purposes.

FYI, it is not only these engines emit gases to cause pollution, but also the human beings and the animals surrounding us. So your reasoning on "national waste" is applicable in the latter context as well :-(

Sorry for writing this, but your message seems unreasonable, when people are exhibiting their heritage of sixties such as Jawa through demonstration.

Their pain and effort in maintaining these vehicles is to be greatly appreciated. These engines are maintained on a day to day basis, and that too through payment of tax, Fitness Cert, Insurance of 300 Rs etc etc., Not an easy task as we think. And they get only rallies to exhibit these pieces of machines, which emit much much lesser CO than the on-the-use motors.

    Let us think positive.

The whole worlds is crying & cares for green peace policy and green fuel, and at Mangalore, for joy ride, pollute the atmosphere publicly? By these two stroke engines? It is not only personal waste but national waste. If some one has to do these rallies compulsorily, let them go to some thick forest area and carry out their skills
