Udupi, Jul 15: Through an order issued on Wednesday July 14, district deputy commissioner, Hemalata, has brought into force the concept of paid parking system in the town for the first time. The municipal commissioner, through a proposal dated May 24, had recommended to the district administration to earmark parking slots within the town in view of the fact that it is growing fast and number of vehicles visiting the town has been going up day by day.

The recommendation of the commissioner also included zebra crossing on roads, enforcing speed limits and one-way traffic, setting up of ‘No Horn’ sign boards, etc. The recommendations reportedly had the concurrence of the additional superintendent of police and divisional commissioner.

The paid parking covers the stretch from Hanuman Circle to government maternity hospital on the left side of the road, light vehicles parking stretch from Super Bazar building on K M Marg to near the church gate on the right side, left side of the road from Diana to the road leading to Kinnimulky, two-wheeler parking from taluk panchayat office to Jodukatte, parking for five light vehicles near ICICI Pak, and two-wheeler parking on Adarsha Hospital Cross Road from Hanuman Circle. Parking slots near board high school gate and opposite Vishwesharaiah Market for two-wheelers have also been converted into paid parking slots.

The vacant spot owned by municipality near City Bus Stand adjacent to R K Textiles will be converted into paid parking for five light vehicles and 25 two-wheelers. Five light vehicles and 25 two-wheelers will also be allowed to be parked near the main fish market on paid basis.

One-way Traffic: One-way traffic has been enforced for vehicles passing through Sadanand Towers via city bus stand and Airodikar Circle to service bus stand. Various speed limits have also been enforced between the welcome arch and Jodukatte, Jodukatte and Lions Circle, Lions Circle to Shiribeedu Junction and Karavali Junction to Indrali. In all other roads within the town except the above, speed limit will be 30 kms per hour, the order has prescribed.
