Mangalore, Aug 8: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) on Saturday August 7 cleared the areas outside the central market where vegetables were sold by the side of the road.

Health officer Basavaraju, along with a team of MCC members, carted away the vegetables and the trolleys they were on despite protests by the vegetable vendors.

Speaking to the press, Basavaraju said that the action was taken by the MCC as the locals and vegetable vendors of Central Market complained about throwing of waste vegetables on the road which causes health problems besides blocking the road.

He added that selling vegetables by the roadside will not be entertained in future, and action will be taken against the vendors if they don’t follow the rules.

The area was cleared within two hours and created uneasiness with some vendors expressing displeasure at the move.

When someone is doing some good work at least learn to appreciate. We need more policing in India and our country is making great strides in this direction. Appreciate the good work, not everyone is in favour of taking bribes.

MCC Mangalore: Please take note of the comments by William Pais. I have noticed as well the bad situation inside the market and I totally endorse and am in agreement with his findings. Also please tidy up the mess and filth inside the Central Market - the market is simply overcrowded and cramped with stalls and displays all over the place, even the merchandise spreading on the walkways, which restricts free movement of customers, causing fall and accidents sometimes. Of course, it is appropriate for the MCC to give these Vendors sufficient notice and warnings, so that they had a chance to clean up themselves before the forceful measures are taken.

Way back in the 1950s`, 1960s`, and 1970s`,the flower and vegetable vendor ladies had a separate place earmarked for them to sell their produce at the old Hampankatta Bus Stop, and I suppose they were shifted to the Central Market when that bus stop was abolished. The same policy goes to these vendors as well, William they should strictly confine to the place allocated to them. Now that the agricutural produce has declined gradually over the years, I believe there are not many of these old time vendors left around.

MCC,don't be cruel to poor vegitable vendors. Be kind to them. Implementing people friendly policies is appriciable but not by creating harasement to poor class. The road side trade is a daily bread earning for them and provide them proper place for tradeing so that people also do not experience dificulty in buying vegitables.Let us opt live and let live policy in th largeer interest of common people."Gubbiya mele Brahmastra beda" please.

Agreed that cleanliness is important. Where there is a state of unemployment what the people do? they start robbery, kidnapping and all cheap stuffs in which all big authorities are also invloved. In both ways these poor people are trapped. Atleast here they are not doing any crime. Let the government provide them proper place to sell their stuff, this is not the right way the municipality is doing. There will be no difference between the gundas and these MCC people what they are doing.

If you have moved them out from that particular place, its your duty to provide them proper replacements as well. At the end of the no one should be harmed. But ofcourse cleanliness counts. Lets us live and let them live.

Dear mr Basavaraju, if your intention is solely to keep things clean, please ensure it continues. If these vendors and the dirt comes back, your own clean reputation will be at stake!

    Dear Antony,
We all agree that they do create filthy and messy situations. But What has muncipal coropration done. See the state of our Central market the 'official and authoridsed' market place of city if you can call it. It is filled with garbage, stench and mess. By any staandard a place unfit to enter. If the corporation can royally derelect from its responsbility who will care for rules. These vegetable vendors have been there may be even before corporation came into existence. We must see an alternative to provide them with other place. You cannot wish them away. Most of the ladies grow vegetables organically on their own land and come to sell it. What about them? Any action should benefit everyone not one class of people. It is not right to get the wrath of poor vendors whose life revolves around growing vegetables and selling them. They are intrinsic part of the system and not out of it.

Why these vendors have to sit on the road and sell they can carry their stuff and go to some big buildings where many people live may be one or two building's the veggies will finish. They should cordinate with each other and do the jobs or they can sell it to some malls.

It was real filthy, messy, and unorganised situation, the hawkers and stall holders created over there, obstructing the pedestrians and the traiffic, and presenting a very bad image, for a long time, and it was high time the Corporation moved in and cleared this mess and chaos, even at the cost of uprooting so many poor vendors and merchandisers.

I suppose they were all unauthorised occupants and I don`t think anything is wrong with moving them away. Perhaphs, the Council could help to find an alternative avenue, in some deserving cases. Good on you MCC! Norman of Mangalore also brought out some illegal cases which should also be promptly dealt with by the MCC.

The city must be kept clean no doubt. But at what cost?. The authorities must be hand in gloves with the city malls and big more bazars. The poor must be allowed to live. Unless alternate place is provided, it is inhuman to touch these poor vendors who supply fresh vegetables from their farms. the city authorities must be must be getting huge kickbacks from mall owners.

What these poor guys have done. Its their daily bread. It is not the crime what they are doing. The MCC if they use their brains for some other good work will be beneficial. What they will get by doing all this. I am sure they or their family memebers were also buying stuffs from here.

These local bhaji vendors are an ancient breed of their own who provide certain local special items to traditional segment of the city, as food. The authorities may have justification according to the law. However, it is the livelihood of many families and dependants that is lost. It is the duty of Govt. and society to see that they are housed in a proper place so that they can continue their services and livelihood which is a fundamental right.

Its very unfortunate that corporation is always behind poor vendors. There are so many commercial complexes where parking lots have been converted into shops and make the customers to park vehicles on roads and causing lot of traffic havoc in busy ares. Corporation is just blind on this.Just example Danish bakery which is very heart of Bendoor well circle occupied footpath and making fast food. Its a bus stop and lot of people are waiting for busses on roads.

Gas stoves kept on footpath and preparing food. If stove busts it will become mini Bhopal tragedy. Why corporation is not taking action agsint thesepeople. U can see same situation in the buildings opossite to kanankady market.Everyday traffic propblems. My request to officials is BE EQUAL TO ALL. DONT SUCK THE BLOOD OF POOR VENDORS AT THE COST OF LAND GRABERS.
