Mangalore, Aug 13: The Nagarika Samiti of Dakshina Kannada (DK) district, an association of more than 50 social welfare and voluntary organizations including Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Kanara Small Industries Association, Rotary and youth organizations in the district, on Thursday August 12, joined the campaign to sign a mass complaint against the setting up of a toll gate at Panambur on the NH 17.

The Samiti alleged that the damaged city roads and ongoing four lane conversion works on the NH 17 are endangering the life of motorists, especially motorcyclists. Many of them have suffered broken limbs already. They said that the setting up of a toll gate at Panambur and collecting of charges will burden the motorists.

Over 10,000 individual complaint forms were placed at the site of the toll gate at Panambur. Nearly 5,000 forms were signed by the motorists by Thursday afternoon, and will be submitted to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) here in a few days.

    Toll for what?
Do I need to pay for travelling within my District/city.
Lifetime road tax is paid for each purchase of a vehicle. So where the question of paying the toll again.
Tomorrow we will have to pay toll for crossing into each Area.

    Toll? For what?
Are the road conditions anywhere close to International standards?
Immediately after the onset of monsoons our roads turn into a collection of potholes making commuting almost impossible and dangerous. First of all, give us the roads that qualify for international standards, we will voluntarily come forward to pay the toll. Also, the tax on petro products in Karnataka is the highest in the country, What is happening with this tax money? Is that not enough to build the roads?
Every time someone purchases a vehicle, he/she has to pay road tax. Where does this money go? Is that money not supposed to be for building and maintaining roads? After all it's called 'Road Tax'.

P.S.: I have no doubt that the SEZ officials are in the fore front to oppose this toll and the same officials are in the fore-front to make the people destitute by illegally acquiring the poor people's land.

the out come of this is a big ZERO, out of this collection some percentage goes to the poletictians poket, and some local BEKAREES (jobless). look at the panemangalore bridge at BCRoad, still they are collecting toll. to bild the bridge it took 20 years plus, collecting toll for more than 4 years if i m not wrong. i think the money collected so far they could build another bridge. wish u good luck guys.

What are we up to? What is the toll for? Cannot be for the roads par excellence. The roads are a death trap for motorists and scooter drivers and in the place taking on hand the repairs of roads on war footing - the public are taxed with toll for the inconvenience caused to them.

It is time that the authorities take practical decisions to help the public instead of burdening them with further taxes.
