Veteran Journalist, avid daijiworld reader Sridhar Achar passes away
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Aug 15: Veteran Journalist and former Chairman of Karnataka Media Academy, an avid reader of daijiworld.com, K Sridhara Achar died in Bangalore yesterday following a massive heart attack.  He was 68.  He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Sridhara Achar, who hailed from Puttur in Dakshina Kannada District, had begun his journalistic career with Navabharatha, Kannada Daily published from Mangalore  in 1965 and then shifted to Bangalore where  he worked in various capacities in Prajavani Kannada Daily in a career spanning nearly four decades.  After his retirement from Prajavani he  was associated with  “Samyukta Karnataka”, another Kannada Daily,  for sometime.  At the time of his death he was serving as the Editor of an Eveninger “Sakshath Sudhi” published from Bangalore.

With his sudden death there was pall of gloom in the house which  was all set to celebrate the wedding today.   In fact the wedding of his younger son Avinash was scheduled for this Sunday, i. e. today and family members and relatives  had assembled in their home in large number.  When he was having breakfast with family on Saturday he suffered a massive heart attack and died.

Sridhara  Achar had served as the President of The Press Club of Bangalore and was the recipient of Media Academy and Karnataka Rajyothsava Awards.  With his death the state has lost an eminent journalist known for his simplicity who commanded respect from all.  The Chief Minister of the state B S Yeddyurappa and many other leaders have condoned the death of this veteran journalist who served Kannada journalism for nearly 45 years.

Daijiworld readers may remember that Sridhar Achar was a regular reader of daijiworld.com and used to give valuable comments on various articles published in the website.

One of his last comments was on the exclusive article published on another journalist, the late Vaddarse Raghurama Shetty on 9th August 2010.  His comment read as follows:

Shridhara Achar, Puttur/Bangalore Monday, August 09, 2010

I fully agree with Gabriel Vaz, that Vaddarse Raghurama Shetty was a committed professional journalist.Like Vaz also started my career in Navabharath in 1965. I worked with Shetty when he was the Chief Reporter of Prajavani, which he left later, to start Mungaru. He never compromised his ideals for the sake of which he quit Prajavani. No doubt he gave voice for the voiceless. By the by his son who is a police officer is Madhukar Shetty who is now attached to Lok Ayukta.

With his death daijiworld has lost an avid reader whose comments were very valuable and highly rational.

I have known Sridhar uncle since i was a little schoolboy. Our families knew each other very well. Sridhar uncle published a little article about me in "Sudha" and i was stunned with joy. He was gentle with kids and spent time with all of us kids. We moved on from Bangalore several years ago. In 2011, i got a chance to revisit Bangalore after a long, long time. I went to his house in Indiranagar. I was shocked to learn about his death the year before and about the unfortunate circumstances and that his family had moved on after selling their home. If there is any way we can connect with his spouse (Mrs. Vanamala) or his children ( Harsha, Kanchana), it will be much much appreciated. This family was special to us and well known to us. My father always respected this true gentleman and his quiet family.

It is indeed very sad and tragic. A truly self-made journalist from the coastal region, knows for his integrity and hard-work. He truly epitomises the adage, `once a journalist, always a journalist.'
He was a friend, philospher and guide to a large number of journalists, especially the youngsters. I had the privilege of closely working and knowing him for three decades. I worked with him as member of Karnataka Patrika Academy, since renamed as Media Academy, when he was appointed as its chairman. In fact, during his tenure as Academy chairman, he successfully served as the Bangalore Press Club president while serving as the Associate Editor of Prajavani Kannada daily.

Even after his retirement, he served the Samyukta Karnataka Kannada daily and was the Editor of a Kannada eveninger till his death at 68. You have rightly mentioned that he was a regular reader of Daijiworld as is evident from his knowledgeable and insightful comments on various issues. I deeply mourn the death of a personal friend and wish to render my tributes to him through this forum, which I feel is most appropriate and befitting.
