Mangalore, Aug 16: The traffic cones that are placed in the city especially to avoid the menace of parking on non-parking zones seem to have no desired effect only costing department’s ex-chequer.

Introduced in the city after its successful usage in Bangalore, it has been helpful incase of lessen hassles in parking two-wheelers and small vehicles. Yet successful implementation by large has been marred by damage to the cones in several areas caused by four-wheelers, especially the heavier vehicles which is a matter of concern to the department.

Speaking to Daijiworld, traffic inspector Manjunath Shetty said that for the parking of four-wheelers the department is planning to mark the parking area with striking paints. Initially the idea of introducing traffic cones was for safety of pedestrians and to enable smooth parking of two-wheelers and smaller four-wheelers. Moreover, now with damages to these cones, the areas where they are positioned will be meant exclusively for the parking of two-wheelers. The public need to co-operate with the department, he urged.

Gurudath Kamat, sub-inspector, traffic west-2 said that lot of plans for the safety of vehicle users and pedestrians are in the pipeline but rain is the main hindrance now. Once the rains subside, the plans of building pedestrian drills and other safety measures can be easily implemented, he added.

When asked whether the department is planning to man the area where traffic cones are placed, he said that there is a shortage of staff at present but with setting up of commissionerate in the city the staff requirement may also be soon fulfilled, he hoped.

Traffic cones, also called traffic pylons, road cones, highway cones or safety cones are usually cone-shaped markers that are placed on roads or footpaths to temporarily redirect traffic in a safe manner.

It is better to introduce Computerized Car Parking System which are manufactured as steel frame structure and are user friendly & require minimum space. It is very important to have open space at crucial centers to build future car park infra-structures. If not available, the MCC should buy small plots on the bye lanes for future car-park building. Those plastic cones are fixed in a very unscientific manner which have chances of rebouncing and hurting the innocent padestrians.

People who have installed they know its not going to work but they made money. I remember long back Mangalore brought cones and it was big news, I think they were installed somewhere near clock tower (which is no more now) and they all got destroyed. So everyone knows that there is know discipline among us. In India you do what ever to improve infrastructure people will never follow the rule. That’s India. In the picture you can one of the guy is looks like holding the mobile he maybe calling some SI to waive off the fine, who knows…

I am sure this is one of the causes of negligence in driving tests, we need to have proper driving tests before issuing. Idea about Iron bars in random is not a bad idea.Imposing fines, thats a very good Idea, should keep hefty fine for traffic violation, atleast RS 500 - Rs 1000.

The way the cones are placed in the Kankanady area is meant to be broken.. The cones are so closely kept and actually the authorities who hav placed the cones need to compesate for the damage that has occured to the vehicles.. Only the smalll cars can enter between the cones.. I had a very bad experience with this in Kankanady.. There shud be a planning team who decided to keep the decide the distance and Im for sure this is not done..

Only solution will be to tie a time bomb with the plastic cone.If it is touched hardly the vehicle must blow up this is only solution for mangalore people to obey the rules. I think high fines must b imposed like GCC countires.

If you really install these kind of hurdles to stop the parking then kindly install the TYRE KILLERS which is a permanent solution for this problem. But as a public awareness kindly drag a yellow line and a notice board ahead of that so that the public and the drivers will be informed better and in advance.

Very simple solution- fit a piece of pipe inside the plastic cone with a flat plate below- 12 inches high- the vehicles that go over it will have their radiators n their engines damaged- sure way of stopping this nonsense.
In other cities they just fix pipes into the concrete ground with anchor bolts but these are not very visible.

Make these cones of cast iron/ MS , a few in random. Once the raidators get damaged, 4 wheelers and their cars too, will start following the rules

The present cones are placed in already congested area, secondly these should be collapsible/ flexible rubber not cheap hard rubber. The concerned department head, require to do some research with regard compatibility/ usability instead of wasting public money. Reflectors placed in rubber are flexible instead of plastic on road dividers.
