Mangalore, Aug 30: KMC Hospital Attavar will hold a week-long free skin consultation camp at its premises from Wednesday September 1 between 10 am to 4 pm.
Human skin is a miracle garment. It's soft, pliable, strong, waterproof, and self-repairing. Skin manufactures and oozes out waxes and oils which act as the body's natural water proofer and protector against germs. It also contains glands which manufacture sweat. With sweat, not only does the body get cooled by its evaporation, but it has a convenient way to get rid of chemicals it does not need.
Being the most exposed organ of our body, it is susceptible to various kinds of diseases. Some of the commonly found skin diseases include: Acne, scars on the face, baldness, allergy, eczema, white patches (vitiligo), Psoriasis, allergic skin in children. Eczema is a form of inflammation of upper layers of the skin characterised by redness, skin edema, itching and dryness, crusting, flaking, blistering, cracking, oozing, or bleeding. Acne is a disorder resulting from the action of hormones on hair follicles and skin’s oil glands. It leads to plugged pores and outbreaks of lesions commonly called pimples. They don’t cause a serious health threat but cause of significant emotional distress. Severe acne can lead to permanent scarring. Psoriasis is a disease which affects the skin and joints. It commonly causes red scaly patches to appear on the skin. Skin rapidly accumulates at these sites and takes a silvery-white appearance.
Most of the skin diseases are not life threatening but the individuals undergo serious emotional distress because of visible skin lesions, which are cosmetically unacceptable. Proper medication, diet, stress reduction, exercise etc helps in reducing the re-occurrence and faster healing of skin diseases.
