Mangalore, Oct 30: A special police team, formed to crack the mysterious case of murder in Mavalli, Murdeshwar in Uttara Kannada district, has succeeded in solving the case and arresting the accused. The team, led by Dakshana Kannada district crime intelligence bureau inspector, Venkatesh Prasanna, and Udupi deputy superintendent of police, Jayant Shetty, arrested the culprit, Venkatesh, with the help of police teams from Karwar and Bhatkal on Friday October 29.

Yamuna (21) was found to have been murdered in the cattle shed rented by Sadiq in Mavalli village on October 23. Because of a fact that a Hindu girl was murdered in a Muslim’s house, communal tensions had flared up, protests were staged, and stones were pelted at the homes of Muslims in the village. The government, in a bid to crack the case, formed a team of officials from Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada district.

The police team found that Yamuna was employed as a housemaid by the family of Sadiq during their stay in an extension in Murdeshwar for 15 days, in relation to a marriage programme. The accused, Venkatesh, who had long been eyeing Yamuna, wanted to have sex with her on the morning of the fateful day. As she ignored his advances and continued to work in the cattle shed, he hit her head with a wooden piece, raped her when she was semi-conscious, and killed her thereafter by smothering her with the help of her own clothes, before disappearing. It is said that Venkatesh was frustrated at the fact that Yamuna was set to marry another boy in three months, duly realising that he cannot dream of ever marrying her.
