Udupi, Nov 2: Minister for higher education and district in-charge minister, Dr V S Acharya, said that power cuts will be a thing of the past in four districts covered by Mescom, once Udupi Power Corporation Ltd, which is presently producing 600 mw of power on experimental basis, starts generating additional 600 mw of power in December this year through its second phase.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday November 1, he noted that presently, Mescom is in need of eight million units of power on a daily basis. After December, Mescom can make use of 10 million units of power daily, and send the excess power to other districts, he explained.

He said that the Padubidri-Karkala road is being widened and developed at a cost of Rs 45 crore, and its width will be increased from the current 5.5 m to 7.5 m. “A new travellers’ bungalow will be built at the spots where the bungalows stand now in the town and Mangalore, at a cost of three crore rupees each. In all probability, the office complex of Udupi district deputy commissioner will be inaugurated in December. There are plans to renovate and refurbish Udupi taluk office too,” he said.
