Udupi, Apr 5: A road accident occurred at 4.45 PM on April 2 at Uppinakote, Brahmavar taluk. Srinivas, a resident of Saligrama, aged 19 years, son of Raju Nairy, was severely injured and admitted to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal for treatment.
Despite the doctors' effort to salvage him, the prognosis was poor and he did not show any signs of recovery. Hence, Srinivas was declared brain dead by the panel of expert doctors officially twice at 6-hour intervals. The first was at 3.15 PM on April 4 and the second at 7.50 AM on Tuesday, April 5, under the protocols and procedures of the 1994 Human Rights Act. Subsequently, Srinivas’ father, Raju Nairy expressed his willingness to donate viable organs to save other needy patients' lives. Two kidneys, two corneas, liver and skin were harvested from Srinivas' body and lives of six patients saved.

As per Jeevasarthakathe protocols and decisions, two corneas, two kidneys and skin were retained by Kasturba Hospital Manipal for the registered patients and liver was transported to Aster Hospital, Bengaluru.
Raju Nairy said, “Organ donation is a noble gesture and my son has committed a great deed even in his death."
Medical Superintendent Dr Avinash Shetty said, "The organ donation is a great work to save lives, and people should encourage such good things” and thanked the deceased Srinivas' family who decided to contribute to a noble cause.
The harvested organs were transferred to all the recipients’ hospitals with the support of the Udupi police from Manipal through the Mangaluru International Airport via Green Corridor.
