Mangaluru, Apr 7: The constitution of Gorakshana Samithis as announced by minister for Animal Husbandry Prabhu Chauhan two months back ago failed to take off.
The minister had announced the constitution of Gorakshana Samithis in the three coastal districts to check increasing cases of cattle theft.
The minister had announced that the samithis should be headed by the deputy commissioners/superintendents of police of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts.
In his letter dated February 3 to the deputy commissioners and superintendents of police, he had stated that cases of cattle theft had hit dairy farmers in the coastal belt and that the police should increase their beat hours, both during daytime and night, to prevent them.
The minister had said vigilance should be stepped up against vehicles that transport cattle illegally. Vehicles suspected of illegally transporting cattle should be stopped. Inspection of vehicles at check-posts should be done by the police to remove the fear of dairy farmers as many farmers had lost their cattle in the recent months.
However, confusion seems to prevail in district administration over the constitution of the samithi.
Deputy director in the Animal Husbandry department Dr Prasanna has said he had received a letter from the deputy commissioner and had forwarded it to the superintendent of police for suitable action to be taken.
Dakshina Kannada superintendent of police Rishikesh Sonavane said suitable measures and action has been initiated to be taken at the police station level and check-posts have also been opened for the purpose.
