Udupi: Three students meet watery grave at St Mary’s Island in Malpe

Udupi, Apr 7: Three young men, students of a college in Kerala, drowned at St Mary’s Island here on Thursday, April 7.

Allen Reji (22), Amal C Anil (22) and Antony Shenoy are the unfortunate victims of this tragedy.

They were on a tour to the island with a group of 42 students and two lecturers from Mangala Engineering College in Kottayam of Kerala.

The students got down to swimming in the sea at the most dangerous spot in the Island. Out of the three students who drowned, bodies of two were recovered immediately. 

While bodies of Allen and Amal have been fished out of the sea. Antony Shenoy's body was found later after a prolonged search of almost two hours.

    It's really a tragic incident. Hearty sympathize to the bereaved family members. But bit of advise to the organizers and coast guard..take extra care when the group is so large. Last week when I visited the spot I observed how the students were behaving. They need to be given strict guidelines that they have to adhere and about the calamities taken place at the venue.

    Why the Malpe coastguards are only for fishing out dead bodies of the drowned? Why they are not there to save lives? This is such a big crazy group of students who ventured out in sea.

    First of all, which travel or tour guide has taken these 42 Kerala students to this dangerous Island. 3 students lost their life. Prevention is better than cure.
