Kadaba, Apr 10: In a shameful incident that occurred on the late night of Friday, an ASI and constable of Uppinangady police station, who were deputed for law and order duty for Ekaha Bhajana Mahotsava near here, assaulted a pan beeda seller and damaged his cart. People present at the spot said that both were under the influence of liquor.

ASI Seetharama Gowda and constable Mohan of Uppinangady police station have been identified as culprits of this incident. They not only assaulted the pan beeda shopkeeper but also damaged his shop and then escaped from the spot in a car neglecting their duty which they were supposed to carry out till 6 am in the next morning.

Both ASI and constable quarrelled with the pan seller over the quality of the betel leaf and assaulted him with a lathi. As the public gathered on the spot and expressed anger, both escaped in a car. Though the public rounded up the car and asked them to take the injured pan seller to hospital they did not show humanity and escaped from the spot.

Public took the injured pan seller to the hospital. Kadaba SI Rukma Naik and personnel went to the hospital and pacified the public. Later, the issue was resolved and a compromise was reached.

Puttur rural circle inspector Umesh Uppalike visited the spot of the incident in the night itself and assured the public that he will give a detailed report to his higher officers.

Witnesses said both the ASI and the constable were inebriated.
