Garlic prices surge: Hits Rs 300-400 per kilo, doubles in a month

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Dec 14: Following the trend set by soaring onion prices, garlic has now witnessed a drastic increase in its retail rates, reaching an astonishing Rs 300-400 per kilo in the market. This surge marks a doubling of prices within a mere month.

Just a month ago, the prices were in the range of Rs 200-250 per kilo. The sharp rise in garlic prices is attributed to a significant reduction in this year's garlic yield. Regions like Nasik and Pune in Maharashtra, known for extensive garlic farming, are experiencing this surge.

Traders point to a short supply of garlic as the primary reason behind the price hike. With new crops yet to arrive in the market, the upward trend in prices is expected to persist. In areas like Bidar, the cost has skyrocketed to Rs 400 per kilo, while in Bengaluru, garlic is being sold for Rs 300-350 per kilo.

As consumers grapple with the impact on their wallets, the situation is anticipated to persist until the arrival of new crops in the market.
