Udupi: St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Cathedral celebrates feast of blessed Fr R Z Noronha

Udupi, Jul 24: The 88th memorial feast of Blessed Fr R Z Noronha, the first vicar general of St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Cathedral, Brahmavar was held on July 22 and July 23, with devotion and fervour. Blessed Fr R Z Noronha shepherded the Orthodox Konkani community in and around Brahmavar for more than five decades.

Pirjenth Rojin Suaris wife of Late Thimothy Suaris and Family, Heroor, Brahmavar sponsored this year’s feast.

The festal Vespers took place on Monday, July 22 with solemnity and reverence at St Mary's Syrian Cathedral, Brahmavar. The ceremonial proceedings commenced with a procession, from the cathedral through Brahmavar town. This symbolic journey was a cornerstone of the event, reflecting the community's faith and devotion. Following the procession, refreshments were provided to all the attendees. In the evening, the vesper prayers commenced, led by former vicar general Fr Ramban G M Skaria, vicar general Fr M C Mathai and assistant vicars. The evening homily was delivered by Fr David Crasta on the saintly life of Fr R Z Noronha, imparting words of wisdom and guidance to the congregation. The festal vespers concluded with benediction.

On Tuesday, July 23, the feast holy mass was celebrated. Former vicar general of SMS Cathedral Fr Ramban G M Skaria was the chief celebrant. Assistant vicars Rev Fr Lawrence D’Souza and Rev Fr Abraham Kuriakose assisted him. Fr Noel Lewis delivered the festal sermon. He said, "Every believer needs to understand the importance of unwavering and absolute faith in God. Faith helps you live through the darkness and through the pain.” The Mass was concluded with the final benediction.

Assistant vicars Fr Merwin D’Silva, Fr Philip Thomas and Fr Sijin Mathew also took part in the festal prayer service.

After the Mass vicar general Fr M C Mathai, proposed a vote of thanks.

Trustee Milton Olivera, secretary Lawrence D’Souza and managing committee members were also present.

Food was served on both days for the devotees.
