Mangaluru, Oct 10: Assistant commissioner (AC) Harshavardhan has issued an order prohibiting all forms of sand excavation within a two-kilometre radius of Uliya Island, effective immediately.
The order states that, except for public transportation by boat, all other activities such as sand transportation by boat or machinery, as well as the stocking and distribution of sand on riverbanks, are banned within the designated area.
The restricted zone includes the area behind Sahyadri College in Adyar village, the Valacchil shore area of Adyar village, and the Pavoor shore area on the left side of Uliya Island.
It may be recalled, the residents of Pavoor Uliya and many like-minded organisations had held several protests condemning the district administration's inaction against illegal sand mining on the island.
