Udupi, May 21: In accordance with the provisions of the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act and the state government’s notification, all mechanised fishing activities will be banned in Udupi district for a period of 61 days — from June 1 to July 31, 2025.

The ban includes fishing using any type of nets or equipment by mechanised boats, as well as traditional boats fitted with inboard or outboard engines exceeding 10 horsepower (HP). However, traditional or country boats and motorised boats with engines up to 10 HP, used solely for transportation, will be permitted to operate during this period.

The department of Fisheries has also instructed all fishermen to strictly adhere to weather advisories issued during this time.

In view of the ban, all fishing boats must return to port by May 31. Legal action will be taken against boats attempting to enter the port after this deadline.

Any fishing activity in violation of this ban will attract penalties as per the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act, 1986. In addition to fines, violators will be disqualified from availing tax-free diesel at the state’s delivery points for one year.

This directive has been issued by the office of the joint director of the department of Fisheries, and all coastal fishermen have been urged to comply strictly with the order.
